In honor of the anniversary of the Battle of Manhattan, Percy Jackson fans the world over will be donning their orange Camp Half-Blood t-shirts and celebrating the accomplishments of our favorite band of demigods.
Here are seven ways you can celebrate the Battle of Manhattan where ever you may be, and you may just discover that there are new Percy Jackson fans you never knew before…
1. Salute the statues in your city.
Any Percy Jackson fan can tell you what a significant role the statues played in the Battle of Manhattan, and in honor of their loyal service and sacrifice, you should take the time to salute the statues you pass as you walk to school or work today. Just give them a quick notice as you begin your day. You never know when you may need to hit their activation button and say the words, “Daedalus Twenty-three, defend the city.”
2. Check and see if Olympus has moved to a city near you.
So, we can’t all visit the Empire State Building and check out Olympus on the 600th floor, but who knows when the gods may decide to relocate again to keep their home safe. It may be worth a shot to walk into the tallest building in your city today and ask the receptionist about the 600th floor… tell them Hermes sent you. If they look at you like you’re crazy, make sure you get out of there fast, and let the mist do the rest of the work for you.
3. Make sure to eat some blue food!
The easiest way to honor Percy Jackson and all his friends would be to have a blue meal or eat some blue foods today. Only eat the blue M&M’s, pick the cupcake with blue icing, try the blue Gatorade for a change, and give a nod to Percy and his mom’s favorite tradition. Oh, and if you have any trouble coming up with blue foods to eat, you can always feel free to make a bland-colored food blue with a little food coloring. Any ordinary food can be extraordinary when you add a few drops, and ta-da! blue eggs, blue toast, blue mashed potatoes. The possibilities are endless!
4. Carry your own Riptide in your pocket, and challenge people to duels.
Riptide has taken up residence in Percy’s pocket since its introduction in The Lightning Thief as a not-so-plain old ball point pen. Why not carry around your own special pen today, call it Riptide, and if you get a chance, challenge someone to a quick duel and whip out your trusty weapon. Anaklusmos will protect you, but he relies on your own skill with a sword, so be careful and keep on the lookout for monsters. We all know that the next monster may be posing as your boss, gym teacher, or guidance counselor. Oh, and other mortals may look at you a bit funny, but hey, the mist can make the humans see things in crazy ways…
5. Be a demigod for a day… leave the cell phones behind.
Demigods know just how hard it is to survive in the modern world without cell phones, so in honor of their sacrifice (can you imagine living without your iPhone in your pocket?) leave the phones at home today and live like a demigod. Email and landlines are on the approved communications list, just make sure to be quick so the monsters can’t find you. And remember, you can always shoot your friends an Iris message if you get into a sticky situation, just make sure you keep a drachma in your pocket — just in case.
6. Call anything tasty that you eat today ‘Ambrosia’
When you unwrap your morning granola bar or take that first sip of your coffee, imagine that the reason it tastes so good is because of the ambrosia or nectar of the gods. Let that feeling wash over you and pretend that every scratch and cut has been healed by the miraculous substance. It can taste like anything, so if your lunch isn’t as yummy as you thought, imagine instead that the ambrosia is making it taste like buttered movie theatre popcorn or a delicious cinnamon roll. Good thing for you, you probably can’t overdose on the stuff like demigods, so feel free to eat an extra brownie or two… do it for Percy.
7. Put on your Yankees cap and walk around invisible all day!
It seems like every fandom has the ability to be invisible these days, but who can blame them when it’s so much fun! Borrow Annabeth’s Yankees cap and pretend that no one can see you. The mist is always there to help you out, so play that prank on your brother, dance on the subway, and eat that extra helping of dessert. Remember, if the hat slips, someone could see you, so if anyone does and gives you a funny look, just adjust the cap and go on your merry way.
Those are just a few of the many, many ways that you can honor the demigods of the Percy Jackson series and their honorable sacrifices at the Battle of Manhattan. At the very least, remember this historic day in Percy Jackson fandom history and take a moment to think about Percy, Annabeth, Clarice, Thalia, and the numerous other demigods of Camp Half-Blood.
