Summer 2012 has just begun, so it’s time to lounge out by the pool and read a good book! Here are five great book series I recommend giving a try.
1. Maximum Ride
The ‘Maximum Ride’ series, by James Patterson, is a young adult sci-fi series about six kids who are used as ‘lab rats’ and turned into human-bird hybrids. After one of the kids, named Angle, is captured and brought back to the ‘School,’ (the lab where the kids were turned into hybrids) the kids race to get her back. The ‘Maximum Ride’ series consists of six books, with the seventh book coming out this August.
2. The Kane Chronicles
Percy Jackson fans might already be familiar with this series by Rick Riordan. After finishing his New York Times bestselling Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Rick Riordan decided to switch from Greek mythology to Egyptian mythology. The series, which consists of three books, follows the lives of Carter and Sadie Kane. Their job is to stop the evil God Set from destroying the Earth. It is the second bestselling series on the ‘New York Times Bestseller List,’ and is definitely a great read. Another series you might enjoy by Rick Riordan is The Heroes of Olympus, a follow-up series to Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
3. The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel
The third bestselling series on the ‘New York Times Bestseller List,’ The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, by Michael Scott, is about the famous alchemist Nicholas Flamel. Based on a real person in history, it is said that Nicholas Flamel discovered the secret of eternal life. For years, Nicholas and his wife, Perenelle, have been searching for the twins of legend. Nicholas’ prophecy reads that there are two twins of legend: one to save the world, the other to destroy it. When twins Sophie and Josh Newman are somehow caught in the world of immortals and gods, they are forced to use their powers hidden from them for so many years and protect the Earth from evil alchemist, John Dee.
4. The Maze Runner Trilogy
The Maze Runner Trilogy, by James Dashner, is the ninth bestselling series on ‘The New York Times Bestseller List.’ The series follows a boy named Thomas, who one day wakes up in a completely dark elevator – with his memory completely wiped. The only thing he could remember was his first name. When the elevator opens, he finds he is in a giant maze, filled with lots of other boys, who call the maze ‘The Glade.’ Every 30 days, another boy arrives in the elevator, so Thomas was expected. But the very next day, the Glade’s first girl arrives. And if things couldn’t get any weirder, she delivers a message: The end is near. Now, Thomas must work together with the other Gladers to find a way out of the maze – before it’s too late. The series has three books, with the fourth one (a prologue) being released this August.
5. Alex Rider
A popular book series about a teen spy, originating from the UK, released its final book last summer, Scorpia Rising. The ‘Alex Rider’ series is about a boy whose uncle was supposedly killed in a car crash. Turns out, his uncle was murdered – and he worked for the British spy agency, MI6. Now it is up to Alex to follow in his uncle’s footsteps and complete a mission that only a child can complete – sneak into the headquarters of Herod Sayle and stop him from releasing poison that will come from his Stormbreaker computers all around schools in the US, killing millions of school children. The series, by Anthony Horowitz, consists of nine books.
As you may have noticed, I left out some popular young adult book series (The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Twilight, etc.) but I figured most of you already knew about them.
If there are any series you think I might have missed, be sure to leave any in the comments!
