2016 is almost upon us and, from what we can tell so far, it’s going to be a huge year for DC Comics.
While DC has been killing it when it comes to TV shows, they’re poised to take over pretty much everything in 2016. From the introduction of an all new expanded DC universe, to a wide array of impressive new shows, to a large emphasis on kick-ass, female-led comics (including Poison Ivy’s very first title), there’s so much to look forward to seeing from DC in 2016.
Though there are numerous things to be jazzed about seeing in 2016, these are the movies, shows, and comics we’re most excited for.
All of the DC movies
‘Suicide Squad’
Suicide Squad is definitely one of our most anticipated films of 2016. After all, DC’s Suicide Squad is one of their most interesting team-ups that they’ve ever created. The idea of villains being put in traditionally heroic roles for impossible missions? So cool. Though there are quite a few things that could go wrong with Suicide Squad (some potentially related to the movie’s PG-13 rating), we’re actually incredibly optimistic about the movie. It has a great cast and the tone of the first trailer was so spot on with what we were hoping for. Plus, we finally get to see Harley Quinn on the silver screen for the first time ever. We’re hoping that this movie dominates and opens the door for future villain flicks, including one centered on the Gotham City Sirens. (Hint, hint, DC. Hint, hint.)
‘Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice’
When it comes to 2016 blockbusters, Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice is definitely going to be one of the biggest (if not in contention for the #1 spot). The movie’s most recent trailer has us super jazzed for the film. Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, the appearance of Doomsday, Wonder Woman… This movie looks nothing short of epic. (And that’s just based on what we’ve seen so far.) In addition to being a huge event on its own, Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice is poised to be the jumping-off point for DC’s upcoming cinematic universe. That’s a huge amount of responsibility, but we know that this movie is going to kill it.
‘Wonder Woman’ glimpses, news, and more
Okay, so we have to wait a little longer for the Wonder Woman movie to actually hit the silver screen. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t look forward to all of the clips and news leading up to that point. We just want all of the Wonder Woman we can get. Clips (and Tumblr gifs) from Batman v. Superman, set photos, and a Wonder Woman teaser trailer… Compared to the complete lack of anything Wonder Woman-related we have at the moment (except for the Linda Carter show), we’re getting a lot.
All of the DC TV shows
‘Legends of Tomorrow’
Legends of Tomorrow comes to our screens in 2016 and we’re super pumped. Not only are we excited about the fact that we’re getting another quality show in the Arrow-verse, but also about the fact that it stars some of our favorite supporting characters in said universe. Ray Palmer, Sara Lance, Leonard Snart… Need we go on? Needless to say, this show is going to be a really fun ride. We can’t wait to see what it has in store for us this season.
‘Lucifer’
If there’s one DC show that looks like it’ll be addictive in 2016, it’s Lucifer. The main character is so mysterious and alluring (as well as, you know, evil-ish). Plus, the idea of him running around solving crimes and punishing criminals in glitzy Los Angeles is almost too good to be true. In all honesty, we don’t know much about the character as far as the comics go (yet), but the trailer for this show has made us put him at the top of our list to research and read about. Though our trust in Fox’s ability to recognize shows with potential makes us want to approach Lucifer with caution (in case, you know, we love it and they cancel it), we just can’t help but be excited about it.
‘Preacher’
Anything that promises to put more Dominic Cooper on our screens is A-Ok in our book. But, when it’s something as compelling as Preacher, the upcoming AMC series, we’re ecstatic. The series, developed in part by Seth Rogan, will follow Cooper’s powered preacher as he sets out on a mission to find God. From the one teaser that has been released so far, it’s clear that it’s going to be dark and gritty but in a different style than the rest of the DC universe. We’re just really digging the look and feel of the teaser and can’t wait to dig into the series. Now, if we could just get a premiere date…
‘Teen Titans’/’Blackbirds’
Not only is a Teen Titans show on TNT a go, but sources are also saying that it’s now titled Blackbirds and will probably begin production really soon. That means that we should be feasting our eyes on Dick Grayson & co. before 2016 ends! We can’t wait to see a new iteration of the Teen Titans, just because of how popular and beloved they are. We’re also really intrigued by the name (if that ends up being true) because there isn’t currently a team in the DC universe called “Blackbirds.” Again, it’s only speculation, but we wonder what impact that could have on the team we know and love (not to mention the DC TV universe)!
‘Powerless’ (probably)
As far as we can remember, nothing like Powerless has ever been done before. A DC comedy that’s pretty much The Office with superheroes flying (and running) around outside? Ummm, yes please! We love the fact that this show centers on an insurance company in the DC universe because there’s just so much damage. We’d be incredibly bummed if this show didn’t premiere in 2016 because we’ve been thinking about it and how funny it’s going to be ever since it was announced.
‘Arrow’
Thank goodness Arrow is returning sooner rather than later. Thank. Goodness. We have to know what happens after this mid-season finale. It’s a matter of life and death. Literally. We also need to know who is in that grave. It’s not like we want anyone we love to be in it or watch any of our favorite characters go through hell just to end up dead and buried. We just have to know. Season 4 has already been so much stronger than season 3 and we just can’t wait to see where it leads us. (Hopefully to more happiness than tears. Fingers crossed.)
‘The Flash’
The speedster storyline will be really ramping up in 2016 and we have no doubt that it’s going to be a wild ride. With Earth-2 Wells now (presumably) helping Zoom and Wally West (another speedster) entering the picture, things are going to get pretty crazy. While we really want to know who’s behind Zoom’s mask (and if it’s someone we love and care about in the regular universe) and how Barry hopes to defeat him, we’re more excited for the journey itself.
‘Krypton’ (maybe)
What better time to premiere Krypton, a show that’s basically a super early prequel (200 years or so) to Man of Steel, after Batman v. Superman dominates the box office? Superman will be on everyone’s mind and the DC cinematic universe will essentially be kicking off, so we’d be surprised if David S. Goyer didn’t go full speed ahead into production for his proposed SyFy show. We’re not completely sold on the show yet, but we’re intrigued to see what Krypton is like when it’s not falling apart.
All of the DC comics
‘DC Bombshells’ in full swing
DC Bombshells kicked off in 2015 and has been gaining steam ever since. The story has been fantastic so far (which is expected, since the incredibly talented Marguerite Bennett is at the helm) and the art just keeps getting better and better (the Soviet propaganda art was especially impressive). With the individuals’ backstories coming to a close soon, we can’t wait to see what comes next! (Note: we’ve been reading the print version of the comic, so we’re a bit behind the digital version!)
New Wonder Woman origin story miniseries
If there’s anything comic book people like, it’s origin stories! In 2016, there’s going to be a new (“Digital First”) miniseries about Wonder Woman’s epic origins. This nine issue series looks like it’s going to give an in-depth look at Diana’s childhood and life before taking up the Wonder Woman mantle. With the new movie coming out, we’re going to want all of the Wonder Woman media we can get our hands on. And hey, maybe this series will do the origin story heavy lifting so that the movie won’t have to work as hard. We can only hope.
New ‘Supergirl’ ongoing series
Thanks to the immense popularity of CBS’ Supergirl, Kara’s getting a comic series! Like the Wonder Woman series, this “Digital First” comic will focus on Kara’s origins. Not only that, however, but it’s also going to follow the continuity of the TV series and continue the storylines we see week in and week out. It’s going to be like a graphic novel companion to the show! How cool is that? While we’re not usually into the idea of tie-in comics, we have faith that this one will be just as kick-ass as the show and that it will be able to tell stories that the show can’t. We can’t wait for the first issue to drop in early 2016!
Poison Ivy miniseries
There’s no such thing as too much Poison Ivy love, so we’re always excited to see her in new comic series (especially when she’s the central focus)! We’re intrigued by this miniseries because it will supposedly paint Poison Ivy in a different light. After all, she’s wrongly suspected of murder, which puts her in an interesting position. As if that’s not cool enough, this is also going to be the first series starring just Poison Ivy! It’s a cause for celebration!
