On this week’s Once Upon a Time season 4, episode 9, “Fall,” the Spell of Shattered Sight reaches Storybrooke. But who will it affect the most?
The Spell of Shattered Sight is making its way from the Snow Queen’s hideaway towards the residents of Storybrooke. As we saw a few weeks back, once the shattered glass makes its way into the townsfolk, it will only be a matter of time before everyone only sees the darkness in each other. Only three people will be immune to the curse: Emma, Ingrid, and Elsa.
In an interview with EW, Jennifer Morrison explains what actions the town will take. “We have to put a plan in place that’s going to keep everyone separated from the loved ones that they could potentially hurt during the curse and give [those immune] a chance to stop it. It’s going to be on us to find a solution for everyone else.”
Unfortunately, Emma must once again bid farewell to her son and parents: “Her parents aren’t going to be their true selves with her because of the curse, they’re not going to be their true selves with their new baby Neal because of the curse. Once again, the weight of the world is on her shoulders in terms of trying to find a solution. It does feel like a really scary goodbye, a very emotional goodbye and a very hectic goodbye because the curse is so close.” With not much time to spare, there is one goodbye that fans are not looking forward to witnessing.
Colin O’Donoghue says that Hook and Emma’s farewell holds much more emotional turmoil for him rather than her. While Emma believes that once she and Elsa stop the curse they can return to building their relationship, Hook’s heart literally lies in someone else’s hands. “Everybody thinks the goodbye is because of the spell and he’d have to chain himself to the docks so he doesn’t hurt her,” he says, “but in actual fact in Hook’s mind, he’s going to be dead, Rumple’s going to kill him.”
O’Donoghue continues, “That’s his final goodbye. It’s heartbreaking for him because there’s so much that he wishes he could’ve experienced with Emma and told her. I’m sure he’s full of regret for all the wrong things that he’s done, but in that moment, it is simply just him saying goodbye to the woman he loves. She doesn’t quite fully know exactly how powerful that is for him because she thinks she’ll cure the spell and she’ll find him and it’ll all be fine, but in his mind, it won’t be.” Ouch!

What about our other loving couples? Even Prince Charming and Snow White have a battle ahead of them. Josh Dallas says, “[David] goes straight for the jugular. He doesn’t mince his words. Him and Snow White are pretty ruthless to each other. It’s just anything they can take and twist and they definitely do that.”
But don’t worry, Ginnifer Goodwin assures us that although they will be dealing some low-blows, their scenes are more humorous than brutally scarring: “They’re going to hit below the belt. I do think their scenes together are straight up humorous and we need that every once in a while.”
Meanwhile, another character is taking every precaution to shield those she loves from the Evil Queen who may be unleashed once the spell reaches her eyes. Lana Parrilla says, “[Regina] knows what [the curse] is going to do to her and what it’s going to bring out. That’s the last thing she wants Henry [Jared Gilmore] to see and the last thing she wants Robin [Sean Maguire] to see is what she’s capable of. When the spell hits, she’s her worst self.”
Parrilla adds, “When I think about the Evil Queen at her worst is when she killed her father. That’s the height of her evil. When you think about becoming your worst self, that’s terrifying.”

Even more terrifying is what the Snow Queen has in store for the little hamlet of Storybrooke. While everyone is concerned about what their words will do, Elizabeth Mitchell adds a bit of mortal danger to the mix, revealing, “[the spell] not only causes pain, but it causes death to everybody except for the people that she’s chosen.”
Does anyone ever think of brewing a spell that will move everyone to a tropical island for a week of relaxation free from mortal peril? Might be worth considering!
