Two more bit the dust tonight on The Voice, and Taylor Swift rocked the stage with “Blank Space.”
Group Performances
Team Adam
Team Adam kicked off the show with a fun performance of Billy Joel’s “Only the Good Die Young.” Unlike other coach + team performances, Adam shared the stage equally with his contestants, instead of singing half the song and letting them jump in at the end, which was considerate. These four guys actually made a great band. I could be into this band. Though apparently the only band Adam has eyes for is Maroon 5, because he seemed super un-enthused about this performance.
Team Pharrell
Team Pharrell, thank you so much for classing this place up. Jackets and bowties? A beautiful black dress? An orchestra? If it weren’t for Pharrell’s manpris, it would have been a perfect picture. The team sang Louis Armstrong’s classic “What a Wonderful World,” which is always nice to hear. DaNica definitely carried the performance, in part because Luke was mostly talk-singing, for some reason. And Pharrell very gently made a point of closing the song with: “We need justice to unfurl, then I can think to myself, what a wonderful world.”
Taylor Swift
Oh, Taylor. You can do no wrong. Her performance of “Blank Space” was not quite as elaborate as her AMAs performance, it was still great. Taylor is so freaking campy in all of her performances, you can’t help but love her. There were chandeliers, there was fire, but you couldn’t take your eyes off of Taylor, because she was just having so much fun. Afterwards, Carson reminded us just how awesome Taylor is, as she is the first female artist to ever replace herself at the top of the Billboard charts. NBD.
The Results
After America’s votes were revealed, we learned Team Adam made it through to The Voice top 8 in its entirety, again, and our bottom three contestants were Team Blake’s Reagan James and Team Gwen’s Anita Antoinette and Ryan Sill. Each contestant now had the chance to sing one more time in an attempt to win America’s votes with the Instant Save.
Reagan James
Reagan sang Nelly Furtado’s “I’m Like a Bird” for her last chance performance. It wasn’t a surprising choice, because it was pretty much the perfect song choice for her voice and her style. Yet somehow, it seemed like she was phoning it in. After her other more interesting performances, this one seemed a little bit boring.
Anita Antoinette
Team Gwen’s Anita Antoinette sang Jason Mraz’s “The Remedy” to show us her stuff before the Instant Save vote. It was another fun song for a fun girl. Gwen Stefani just loves her so much she might just adopt her no matter how this show works out. Anita’s performance was good, with a notable moment where she really belted the first belt we’ve heard from her. Unfortunately, she was a bit pitchy all the way through.
Ryan Sill
After trying his hand at rock for a few weeks, Ryan fell back into his pop wheelhouse in a last chance attempt to stick around. Singing Howie Day’s “Collide,” he reminded us once again that his voice is perfect, if only he could find a comfortable stage presence to go along with it. Maybe if Gwen hadn’t tried to fit him in a rock box these past few weeks, he wouldn’t be in this position.
Instant Save
America had five minutes to vote to save their favorite endangered contestant. When the show went to commercial after the polls were opened, the results were shown as they came in, on the bottom of the screen. Ryan was well in the lead for the entire time, and even after the coaches’ pleas, that stuck. Ryan will be moving on to the top 10, and Reagan James and Anita Antoinette are going home.
The top 8 performs next Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC, with the results airing live on Tuesday.
