Good news, Luther fans: Idris Elba will indeed be reprising his iconic role, in a two-part BBC miniseries to air next year.
Just one day after the news broke that Fox will be remaking Luther for American audiences, BBC has confirmed that the original crime drama will continue with a miniseries.
The two-part series will air in late 2015, and yes, star Idris Elba will reprise his role, according to Variety. It is expected that the rest of the original cast will return as well.
Each episode will be an hour long, and original creator Neil Cross will pen the sequel series.
In a statement, Cross expressed gratitude for the opportunity to revisit the original series, saying, “Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there’s hardly been a minute when I didn’t wonder what happened next. So I decided to find out. We’re putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work.”
Cross is going to find himself busy next year, as he is also slated to work as showrunner and head writer on Fox’s Luther remake. Elba will serve as executive producer on that series, but will not reprise his role as the title character.
Luther ran for three years on BBC One, and comprised of 14 episodes. It has won several Emmy Awards for Best Actor, Best Miniseries and more.
