Read what Elizabeth Mitchell can reveal about the Once Upon a Time season 4 villain, the Snow Queen.
In Once Upon a Time season 4, episode 7, we flashed back to the Snow Queen’s youth, to discover how she became as she is.
She discovered her powers as a child, and her sisters Helga and Gerda (the future Queen of Arendelle) promised to always stand by her.
But when Ingrid accidentally killed Helga, Gerda turned on her and trapped her in the urn.
As an adult, the Snow Queen is still searching for the family she lost, hoping to recreate it with Elsa (Georgina Haig) and Emma (Jennifer Morrison).
Speaking to TV Fanatic, Mitchell explains how she approached the complex character, who is of course not an outright villain – like the Wicked Witch (Rebecca Mader) last season, she is partly a victim of circumstance.
Because Ingrid has been so isolated throughout her life, Mitchell says, “I started to play her like a pre-teen girl who has never been in the world and someone who doesn’t really know.”
“She’s really very innocent on the inside,” Mitchell muses. “She wants love.”
At the same time, Mitchell absolutely does not think we should be sympathizing with the present-day Snow Queen. “She’s doing horrible things to everyone. She made a lot of not great, really selfish choices but hopefully she’ll figure it out,” she says.
On Ingrid’s relationship with Gold (Robert Carlyle), Mitchell says they’re both “scorpions,” who should not trust each other.
“There’s a scene in the next episode that one of the characters says to my character ‘You walk in the way of darkness,’ like you walk the dark path, and I found how telling that is because she is corrupted,” Mitchell says. “She’s a corrupted person, she walks on the dark side, so I think they have that in common.”
Do you think the Snow Queen is a good addition to the Once Upon a Time universe?
