There’s a long history of great characters that excel on a technical level. Every supernatural, investigative, or superhero story has need for someone that can dig a little dirt at a moments notice. From Chloe Sullivan on Smallville to Huck on Scandal, we’ve seen that IT experts come in all shapes and sizes.
This week’s honorees for Hypable Honors are two of the finest IT experts on TV. Both players are on the side of the vigilantes. One is a valued member of Team Arrow, while the other is the most trusted sidekick to Amanda Clarke. Hypable Honors
Show: ‘Arrow’
Actor: Emily Bett Rickards
Emily Bett Rickards proved long ago that she, and Felicity Smoak, are more than just a pretty face on Arrow. This was never more prevalent than in this week’s episode, “The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak.” Not only did we get to see a bit of Felicity’s backstory, we got to see her all gothed up, we met an old boyfriend, and we were introduced to the one and only Mama Smoak. All of these items combined to give us an even more incredible look at the character we have all grown to love and adore.
Emily absolutely blew us away. She doesn’t see the spotlight as often as she should on Arrow, what with all those masked men running around saving Starling City, but when she gets her moment, she more than shines.
Emily had a lot to do in this episode. From the flashback scenes to the little bit of pistol whipping she got to dish out, every moment was a Felicity-fangirl’s dream. Watching her and Charlotte Ross (who played Donna “Mama” Smoak) go toe to toe in an absolutely gut-wrenching moment had us clutching our tissues with unbridled emotion.
There has always been more to Felicity Smoak than we knew, and Emily Bett Rickards’ portrayal of her not-so-savory years had us riveted through every suspenseful minute. Her chemistry on-screen with not only Stephen Amell, but Brandon Routh, Grant Gustin, and Nolan Gerard Funk shows that not only is her talent remarkable, but she can stand toe-to-toe with anyone they put in her scenes. We look forward to seeing where Felicity Smoak’s character goes from here, knowing that wherever it may be, Ms. Bett Rickards will do it more than justice.
Thank you Emily for turning the part of a one-off IT girl into the leading lady. We couldn’t be happier to see Felicity grow before our eyes and blossom into the kickass hacker of our dreams.
Show: ‘Revenge’
Actor: Gabriel Mann
In an episode that seemed ripe with positivity, the coin sure did flip quickly for Nolan Ross. He has been trying since Revenge’s season 4 premiere to get Emily to step back from her revengenda and find a way to tell her father who she is. His biggest obstacle? Emily herself. This week, Emily/Amanda’s father became a new hurdle, and this one hits back.
Gabriel Mann has been a constant source of excellence throughout Revenge‘s 3 and half year run so far. No matter what ups and downs the series has had, Gabriel has always delivered one spectacular performance after another. Nolan’s snarky comebacks and cheeky smiles have always been a welcome distraction from Emily’s constant smirks and scheming.
This past week, his unwavering dedication to Emily Thorne’s cause hit a very unfortunate roadblock. Gabriel Mann brought Nolan’s inner struggle with whether or not to just tell David why it appears that he had stolen his daughter’s inheritence. Nolan is one of the only characters that can safely say he has been working to do what’s right for the entirety of the show’s run. Even when his actions may be questionable, his motivations have always been above board.
No matter what Nolan may be up to, Gabriel Mann never ceases to amaze Revenge fans. He plays loyalty, friendship, honor, and more with performance above and beyond the cards he is dealt.
