This week on The Flash season 1, episode 4, “Going Rogue,” we finally got a tiny taste of Felicy Smoak in Central City.
Captain Cold
Barry’s practicing how to multitask, playing games with everyone in the lab all at once, and he’s actually really good at it! Elsewhere, a security truck full of cash gets overtaken by a bunch of armed crooks, so Barry leaves to take care of it. While someone does get shot (not Barry), it’s a relatively successful mission. The crooks didn’t get away with what they wanted: A famous diamond.
Barry saw one of the crook’s faces and IDs him as Leonard Snart. We see Snart talk to his crew, and it’s revealed he knows a TON about how the police operate, and wants to figure out a way to get rid of the man who screwed up his operation. He shops around an illegal warehouse and grabs a gun that was stolen from Star Labs that can shoot out ice cold flame – a deadly weapon for Barry. Dr. Wells then conveniently realizes that the gun (created at Star Labs) is missing from their cage.
Snart heads to the museum that holds the diamond while Barry is at Trivia Night, which forces him to leave earlier than expected while Felicity covers for him. At the museum, Snart hits Barry in the leg with his gun and gets away with the diamond.
Why is the gun so bad for Barry? It essentially gives Barry third-degree frostbite, and the only reason the nerves in his legs aren’t permanently damaged is because he heals at an abnormally fast rate. He needs to avoid this gun at all costs.
Naturally, Barry gets pissed at Cisco for creating the ice gun in the first place. Why? Because Cisco made it to stop Barry while he was in a coma in case he turned out to be a psycho, and Barry is incredibly offended. Cisco makes up for it by being able to locate Snart, but Barry turns off his ear piece before going to fight him because he still doesn’t feel like talking to Cisco or the team.
Snart is at a train station, where he hijacks a train and freezes it to force Barry to save everyone he can before it crashes while Snart gets away for good. Felicity talks the team into ignoring Barry’s emo mood, though, so Cisco shows up to the scene with a fake freeze gun even bigger than Snart’s and scares him off. While he manages to save Barry, Snart gets away unharmed.
Daddy Issues
On the non-crime side of things, Iris is getting the cold shoulder from her dad after telling him about her relationship with Eddie. But one thing is distracting her: The Streak! She is determined to find out more about him, while also wanting to blog about him.
Iris confronts her dad later in the episode, and he explains he doesn’t like that she’s dating his partner. Not for necessarily selfish reasons, though. Because they’re always in dangerous places, Joe can’t handle the fact that her boyfriend might die while on a mission with him. Iris understands, but she still doesn’t want to stop dating Eddie.
Joe changes his mind after Eddie saves him from being killed, and in the end the father/daughter relationship is not nearly as strained as it was in the beginning.
Barry & Felicity Forever
Felicity is back in Central City! She shows up at Barry’s lab, giving Barry and Iris a surprise. After catching up a little bit, and being completely adorkable, Felicity lets Barry know she knows his secret (she was sitting on the rooftop in episode 1) so he takes her to Star Labs to check out the facilities where she’s introduced to Cisco, Dr. Wells, and Caitlin.
Iris invites Barry and Felicity to a trivia night at a local cafe, trying to force them to go on a double date with she and Eddie, and it’s a plan we agree with all too much. The entire night Iris and Eddie try to connect Barry and Felicity, but Barry is hesitant to believe she’s into him. But she is guys, she so, so is.
After the events in Central City Felicity says goodbye to the team and leaves Barry without so much as a kiss, which kills us. But Barry catches up with her while she takes the train back to Starling City, and they bond over how they both like someone that doesn’t like them back: Barry with Iris and Felicity with Oliver.
In their last scene together, Barry finally kisses Felicity before running off back to Central City, and it has us pining for more.
The Rogues
At the end of the episode, Snart is talking to someone who he’s trying to recruit onto his team. A guy who loves playing with fire: Mick Rory. Curious about who this guy is? Highlight the white text below. Comic book spoilers ahead, so highlight at your own risk.
Mick Rory, otherwise known as Heat Wave, is one of the primary foes against the Flash. He joins Snart (otherwise known as Captain Cold) in a team that calls themselves the Rogues (hence this episode title, for those who were confused). You can expect the Rogues to be coming up a lot this season, and Heat Wave and Captain Cold are just a couple of members from this villainous team.
