‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 6, episode 4, ‘Black Hole Sun’ recap
1994
Ky is trying to figure out why they are stuck on May 10, 1994. Damon hints that it may be the day that he did the worst thing he ever did.
Present
Elena and Stefan are patrolling the perimeter of Mystic Falls looking for Sarah with no luck. Stefan tries to run back to his new life, but Elena convinces him to prove to her that he can truly move on before she leaves him alone.
Matt and Jeremy are doing their part to find Sarah within the city limits. Well, Matt is. Jeremy is getting a full medical work up from the doctor. Alaric gets a little bit of flirty-flirt on. Go Alaric.
Tripp is busy tending to the death of one of his recruits (remember the guy Enzo killed last episode?). Matt puts on a REALLY good poker face (we’d believe he had that ace up his sleeve), and offers to come along with Tripp to the police station, since he was one of the last people to see his friend alive.
1994
Damon continues his story. We see him hanging out with Stefan and contemplating taking over the Salvatore boarding house, but he finds out that his ‘uncle’ and the pregnant lady that lives there are both on vervain. It flashes back to the present, and Damon gets a little feisty about how exactly they are gonna get home, so Ky lets them in on the plan. They are going to harness the power of the eclipse with the use of a relic that Bonnie will find via locator spell. We find out that the object was last seen in the Pacific Northwest, which makes us wonder if he isn’t a part of that coven of witches we heard a bit about from Enzo a couple episodes back (scrambles through notes to get the name again…).
Present
Alaric is checking in on Jeremy at the medical center. While flirting with the doctor, he gets a bit thirsty when a boy comes in with a face full of blood courtesy of a bloody nose. Not so smooth Ric. Maybe you need some remedial flirting lessons.
Stefan takes Elena to a restaurant for step 2 of his ‘system’ for moving on. He, Stefan Cooper, proposes to her, Elena Williams, in the window seat. After quite the show (bull-fighting injury? really Stefan?), Elena accepts and they hug.
1994
Damon is crashing paper airplanes in the front yard while Bonnie works on the locator spell. Then we get more of the flashback story. Damon is hanging out with Liz Forbes (future Sheriff Forbes), showing her the tool that you use to view the eclipse (and how wierd is it to see Caroline’s mom with long blonde hair and in a DRESS?), until Stefan comes at him with an accusation or two. He wants to know what Damon has done to Gail, Zach’s pregnant friend. Stefan found fang marks on her wrist. Damon had been ‘snatch-eat-erase’-ing within the walls of the Salvatore mansion. Stefan snapped his neck.
1994
Bonnie’s locator spell works, and locates the artifact they needed! And it was in Ky’s pocket the whole time. He says that it was a test to make sure Bonnie’s magic was accurate enough, and now they have everything they need to escape.
Present
They talk about Stefan’s 30-year schedule for self-re-invention, and when she does the math and figures out that he had only spent 15 years out of Mystic Falls before he met her, she asks why he cut his system short. His answer? “I met you.” Awww. Elena directs the convo back to Damon, or as she keeps referring to him ‘your brother,’ and Stefan almost cuts down Elena’s defenses when he says, “It’s a little weird to hear you refer to Damon as just ‘my brother’.” He covers his tracks at the last minute though, and toasts to change.
1994
Ky is triangulating the location they need to harness the power of the eclipse to blow this ’90s popsicle stand, when Bonnie notices a story in the papers Damon threw in the yard earlier. The story is about a family slain in Oregon, where Ky, real name Malachi, said he was from. He admits to the killings. The Gemini coven (ding, ding, ding!) trapped Ky in this little hell hole.
Present
Alaric and Jeremy are beating the crap out of each other in the forest. They finally get to the root of their problems when Jeremy admits that he’s still torn up about Bonnie dying after saying goodbye to him over the phone to save everyone else. Ric then lays into Jeremy by re-telling his life story. Now, he can’t even hit on a woman without craving blood, and that’s messing with his head too. Alaric reminds Jeremy that through it all, they have to find a way to keep going. That’s what we do, we keep going.
1994
Bonnie is not willing to let Ky escape his prison, and Damon is trying to convince her that it’s not their problem if Ky escapes too. She hints that maybe Damon is okay with this because he’s got some atrocities in his past, which sends Damon back to his worst day story.
Zach and Stefan find Damon in a room full of blood-less corpses from the eclipse party. He has Zach’s pregnant girlfriend, still alive, in his clutches, and he feeds on her before snapping her neck and leaving Stefan with some more misery, just like he promised.
Ky tries to lay a hand on Bonnie as he was trying to convince her to help send them back, and Damon quickly shuts him down. He tells him in no uncertain terms that he is NEVER to lay a hand on Bonnie. Quite the beautiful moment.
Present
Matt is riding with Tripp and he hints to the elder man that his dead friend told him that he was hunting a vampire. Matt plays the ‘that’s crazy, right?’ card, and Tripp decides to show him something.
Elena rushes into the bar to save the day (and grab her jacket). She tries to convince Stefan that Damon isn’t worth his grief, but finally, Stefan can’t take her preaching to the choir anymore. He tells her what she did with Alaric compelling her memories away, and she doesn’t believe him. Stefan’s happy that she found a way to move on so easily, but he walks out after telling her that he will move on his own way.
Tripp shows Matt a secret cabin. Tripp returned to Mystic Falls to check on his grandmother, and as soon as he crossed over the town line, memories came flooding back for him. He remembered that a vampire killed his wife, and compelled him to remember being responsible for her death (sound like Damon’s handiwork to anyone?). He is now resigned to killing each and every vampire he can get his hands on, including Enzo, the one responsible for killing Matt’s friend in the woods the night before.
Jeremy runs into his friend Sarah, AKA dog-bite-girl, at the Salvatore mansion. She is clutching a picture of Gail, the pregnant woman Damon killed in 1994, and says that the woman is her mom. Stefan rushed her to the ER and the doctors did an emergency C-section to save the baby. Sarah is half-Salvatore.
Elena is angry at Alaric for compelling her to forget Damon. Alaric hands her a journal she wrote for herself in case anyone broke their promise and told her about her past feelings. She looks through a box of reminders of her time with Damon, and as she is able to keep them at a distance, she chooses to keep living as she is. Damon-memory-less.
1994
Ky has no magic of his own, but he can consume others’ magic. If he consumed Bonnie’s magic, it would kill her. He gives them an ultimatum. They can all return to the present together, or he can consume her magic, kill Damon and return all by his lonesome.
Present
Stefan is working on Damon’s old car when Ivy appears, covered in blood, now a vampire. Talk about a turn of events!!
