Lots of characters were drinking during Scandal season 4, episode 5, and rightfully so: Things got dramatic.
The main event: Poor Jake!
We begin during a late evening in the Oval Office where Fitz is asking for another update on Jake from Cyrus. The Chief of Staff has nothing to offer because Jake is refusing to give a confession.
Olivia isn’t able to get an update on Jake either. (Remember: She doesn’t know what’s happened to Jake at this point.) Her latest call to her boyfriend goes unanswered when Rowan makes a surprise visit to her apartment so they can unwind with a bottle of wine. In their conversation, Rowan acts like he didn’t dramatically accuse Jake of killing Jerry Jr. at the end of last week’s episode. In fact, his kindness towards Olivia in this moment is gross when you consider how he’s blatantly lying.
“What if I’m supposed to be saving him right now instead of drinking wine with you?” Olivia asks. Her intuition is always right! Too bad she didn’t act on it in this moment.
We jump to Jake in the interrogation room, where he’s been for 20 hours. He’s refusing to drink or eat and wishes to speak to the president. He’s confident that Fitz will show up on his own, and when that happens, he’ll be able to explain himself. Oh.. if only it was going to be that easy.
Olivia enlists Huck to find out where Jake could be. It turns out his last known location was the White House. So Olivia calls Fitz and asks if he would happen to know where her man is, but he offers no help.
Fitz is taking his aggression out on Olivia because he’s fed up with the lack of progress on Jake. So, he decides to visit Mr. Ballard himself (Jake guessed right!) at the Pentagon.
When Fitz arrives, he acts friendly towards Jake. They sing together, Fitz offers his prisoner better food – they’re best buds!
… Then POTUS lays down the gauntlet: Jake must sign the confession. The accused insists he didn’t kill Jerry Jr., but Fitz’s mind is fogged by the fact that Olivia and Fitz are lovers.
Cyrus comes over to Olivia’s to explain everything “as a courtesy.” Jake killed Jerry Jr., Harrison, and James, Cyrus claims. Olivia is naturally in shock about all of this, but Cyrus forbids ever speaking about it with him again.
So where does Olivia go next? Rowan’s office, of course. She accuses her father of killing the three amigos. Rowan claims that he’s only guilty of setting Jake up with her, and that he isn’t responsible for the death of Harrison. “I wanted you to be happy. That’s all I ever wanted,” he tells Olivia. The force of nonsense is strong with this guy.
At the end of the episode, Fitz re-enters Jake’s interrogation room and punches him repeatedly. That blood shines bright on Jake’s white shirt. After every punch, Jake is reminding Fitz about having sex with Olivia on an island. Jake turns into a punching bag for the president. Maybe this will help him get all of the aggression out, and Fitz will finally begin to listen?
Elsewhere…
– Huck is spying on his wife Kim when she comes out of the house and asks him to leave – we learn here that he had to break up the family, or secret spies were supposedly going to kill his wife and son. He comes back the next day and promises he’ll leave — if Kim lets him see Javi.
She agrees, and he returns that night to see his son. Unfortunately it was a trick – Javi isn’t there. Instead there’s a doctor waiting because Kim thinks he needs help.
– Mellie continues to be a mess, but a big change is on the horizon. In the heat of an argument during the second half of the episode, Fitz reveals how Jerry Jr. was killed. She’s shocked but believes it helps her cope with the tragedy of it all. “[His death] wasn’t senseless, it had a point,” Mellie says, because she realizes it helped them win the election. “Our soldier, our war hero,” she proclaims. Fitz is disgusted with her thoughts and orders her to never speak to him again until she’s back to normal.
His threat and the new info appeared to work on her. Mellie steps into the bathroom, takes off her bathrobe and Uggs, and showers the pain away. It looks like she’ll be nearly back to normal next week, or at least she won’t be making daily visits to Jerry’s grave.
– David gets upset about becoming a powerful player because he doesn’t like it. “Why are we all trying to be like Olivia Pope?” David wonders. Abby goes straight to Olivia’s to complain to her about inspiring him. Umm… okay? Sorry that she rubbed off on someone. And, naturally, all viewers at home couldn’t disagree more with David.
That’s not the point right now, however. Olivia breaks down in front of Abby over what she’s learned about Jake and they become friends again. Finally! We missed Abby not hating Olivia.
