Gracepoint episode 4 didn’t feel like the most exciting episode of the season so far, but Carver and Ellie may have two big suspects.
Last week’s cliffhanger left us wondering who owned the phone number discovered on a note in Danny’s pocket. Gracepoint episode 4 answered that question quickly: The number belongs to a man named Lars, but Carver doesn’t know why Danny could’ve needed it.
The police begin re-inteviewing everyone to see if they know Lars, and Jack is the first to be able to recognize him.
So they’re making (a little) progress, and Ellie is happy about that. In a scene in the car with Carver, Anna Gunn runs through some of the most awkward dialogue we’ve seen from her so far. Her character is happy about their progress – but is it really progress? We still have six more episodes to go, Ellie!
The detectives head over to their second suspect, Chloe’s coke-dealing boyfriend Dean, who immediately bolts as soon as he sees Carver and Ellie. Once they catch up with him he refers them to the guy he got the coke from. This was a bad idea on Dean’s part, because the coke source says Danny and Dean showed up at his place together, and that Danny did something to piss Dean off.
Dean is brought in for questioning about this recent new information and doesn’t share anything that would clear him of suspicion. After the interview, Ellie is greeted by Beth, who’s frustrated because she’s just discovered the photo left by the police of Lars in her home. Beth gets really (and, frankly, unfairly) angry at Ellie over this photo because she recognizes him from work. It’s the same person Jack described.
Speaking of angry parents, Mark is upset that Paul put up a photo and a biblical quote in front of the church.
Back at the station there’s more bad news for Danny: Ellie has footage of Danny stealing magazines out of a convenience store. Carver suggests they go to the family’s home that night to present their latest findings. Maybe it’ll calm them down after feeling so angry over the lack of progress.
Or not.
The family meeting turns into mayhem when the family sees the footage of Danny, and Beth is angry at everyone – her husband for cheating and her daughter for dating a drug dealer. Later the parents both calm down, though Mark still doesn’t come clean about his relations with Gemma. At least Beth knows about it… right?
Elsewhere…
– Father Paul catches up with the creepy psychic in town and suggests he stay away from Beth. It sounds like Paul is a little jealous of Raymond trying to help Danny’s family cope.
– Rene stops by Owen’s apartment and they decide to forget their troubles for a little while thanks to a bottle of alcohol. Rene is thinking of leaving town since she’s making no progress on covering Danny’s murder. Maybe a night in bed with Owen will change her feelings towards the town.
– Susan continues to be weird. In this episode she snaps the neck of a chicken and is stood up by Vince. Sure, it’s strange she has Danny’s skateboard, but it seems like her character’s sole purpose is to throw off audience’s guesses.
– Ellie’s son Tom stops by Vince’s to get his skateboard repaired, and Vince starts asking questions about the investigation as if he’s the murderer who’s curious if the detectives are closing in on him. Later, Tom sneaks a glance at Mom’s detective notebook while his parents are debating inviting Carver over for dinner. Carver gets his invite later in the episode, from Ellie… who dreads even letting the invitation escape her mouth.
The episode’s cliffhanger: Carver tries to call someone named Julianne, who doesn’t answer the phone. And that same night, out in the water, a boat is on fire.
