Fox isn’t ready to announce a time of death for its freshman drama Red Band Society, and has ordered new episodes to extend its first season.
Red Band Society is a high-concept dramedy: kids and staff at a five-star hospital are living it up, forming friendships and making enemies, pretending like they’re in a boarding school with co-ed dorms.
Unsurprisingly, the teen show Fox was clearly hoping would replace Glee as its signature teen show isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
However, the show does have its staunch supporters, and Fox is spending a lot of time and money to send the cast and crew out to real hospitals, to visit and support real patients.
And despite its low ratings (a modest 3.17 million viewers tuned in last week, according to Zap2It’s TV By the Numbers), Fox has now ordered four additional scripts for season 1.
This gives the network a bit of breathing space before making its final decision about the show’s future. The four new scripts might not make it to air if the show flatlines before time comes to shoot them, but for now, production’s still going.
Red Band Society is currently in the middle of its two-week hiatus; it’ll return on November 5 with season 1, episode 6, “Ergo Ego.”
Are you hoping that Red Band Society will stick around, or have you turned in your membership bracelet already?
