Tonight on The Voice, we saw the last of the season 7 battles, and the very last steal, as the coaches finalized their teams for next week’s knockout rounds.
The last of the battles saw some of the standouts from the blind auditions go head to head, with only one steal to spare. The coaches have whittled down their teams for the knockout rounds, so the best of the best will be competing for their spot in the live shows(with the help of guest advisor Taylor Swift, of course.)
Battles
Brittany Butler vs. Ricky Manning
Team Pharrell’s final pairing of the battle rounds was Brittany Butler and Ricky Manning. Pharrell paired them because they both have “scary” good voices, jazzy for Brittany, and R&B for Ricky. Pharrell chose “On Broadway” by George Benson for their battle song, because the song is about how difficult it is to make it in the music biz. Ricky was nervous about Brittany’s unique voice, but he really connected with the song. Brittany really excelled with the scatting at the end of the song. Pharrell said it sounded like Skittles, which is a delicious but completely nonsensical compliment. Both performed well in the battle, but Pharrell chose Ricky as the winner. Brittany was very upset, but Pharrell told her to keep her dream alive.
Kensington Moore vs. Reagan James
Blake paired young artists Kensington Moore and Reagan James, because they both occupied the same space on his team. He chose Lorde’s “Team,” for them to perform, because Lorde is such a stylist, and he felt both girls would be able to do something really interesting with the song. Kensington struggled with familiarizing herself with the song, and being confident in her performance. Reagan needed to open up to both Kensington and the audience while performing. Unfortunately, Kensington had a nasty bout of kidney stones and had to miss a rehearsal (Phillip Phillips knows that feel, bro.) It was a great battle, and the girls paired wonderfully together. However, 15-year-old Reagan showed a confidence and stage presence that belied her years, and after a lot of debate with himself, Blake chose her as the winner.
Beth Spangler vs. Mia Pfirrman
The final battle of The Voice season 7 paired Team Adam’s Beth Spangler and Mia Pfirrman. Adam paired them because they’re both belters, so what better song to give them than “I Turn To You” by The Belter herself, (and returning season 8 coach!), Christina Aguilera? Both girls were impressed by each other’s voices, and were excited to have a partner that would challenge them. Adam and Stevie’s big lesson for them was that LESS IS MORE. Both girls were going all out, but then seemed to give up after their big moments. The battle was the ultimate diva-off, and Adam really had his work cut out for him. But he needn’t worry, because even though he chose Mia as the winner, Gwen still had her final steal left, and used it on Beth.
Odds and Ends
In other battles that were apparently not exciting enough to show in their entirety, Team Blake’s Allison Bray beat out Fernanda Bosch, Team Gwen’s Anita Antoinette beat out Mayra Alvarez, and Team Gwen’s Bryana Salaz beat out Gianna Salvato.
The Voice knockout rounds begin next Monday and Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. on NBC.
