Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow may be squaring off with a ghost in the next Pirates of Caribbean film.
Reports from Hollywood trades today reveal that actor Javier Bardem is currently in talks to take on the role of Pirates of the Caribbean 5’s lead villain.
The fifth installment in the high seas fantasy tale will be directed by Kon-Tiki helmers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, who revealed last year that the film may be subtitled Dead Men Tell No Tales. The title would be a reference to the line said on the popular Pirates attraction at Disney Parks around the world.
If Bardem does take on a ghost role, the “dead men” portion of the subtitle would make a lot more sense.
Fun fact: Bardem is married to Penelope Cruz, who played Angelica in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
The actor is also no stranger to playing villainous roles; he played Villa in the latest James Bond film Skyfall. He’s also well-known for his role as Anton Chigurh in 2007’s No Country for Old Men.
The next Pirates film is scheduled to hit theaters July 7, 2017. Orlando Bloom (who plays Will Turner) and Geoffrey Rush (Captain Barbossa) are expected to return to the franchise to co-star with Depp.
