Batman was one of the most popular characters in The Lego Movie, and he’s getting his own spinoff titled Lego Batman.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lego Batman is being fast tracked by Warner Bros. with Will Arnett returning to voice the titular hero.
The Lego Movie animation director Chris McKay had been tapped to direct The Lego Movie 2, but the sequel had been delayed indefinitely. He’ll now be turning his efforts towards Lego Batman. The film will be produced by The Lego Movie writers and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as well as Roy Lee and Dan Lin.
Lego Batman is currently being written by Seth Grahame-Smith, known for his novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter as well as for writing Dark Shadows. Grahame-Smith will also be writing Beetlejuice 2.
Currently, Warner Bros. is hoping to release Lego Batman in 2017, perhaps even on the May 26, 2017 release date that was originally planned for The Lego Movie 2, which will presumably come in 2018 or later now.
Is Lego Batman a good idea? In The Lego Movie, Will Arnett’s Batman was the perfect foil to Chris Pratt’s Emmett, counterbalancing his constant lightness with a comedic darkness. Will that comedic darkness be as good as the central element of a film as it was as a perfectly balanced side element? Time will see if it’s a good idea or not.
Chris Miller thinks it is:

Before Lego Batman is released, Ninjago, a ninja themed Lego property, will be released. Ninjago is set to hit theaters on September 23, 2016.
