There’s one big reason that we’ve been looking forward to see this movie for so long, at that’s because it’s a film from writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson. Every time Anderson makes a movie it’s an event, and that’s because he every movie he’s made has been great. At this point it’s hard it imagine him making a bad movie.
Only two years after the multi-Oscar nominated The Master, Anderson is back with Inherent Vice. It’s Anderson’s first return to the ’70s, the time period of his breakout film Boogie Nights.
Inherent Vice is an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel of the same name. This is the second time Anderson has adapted a novel into a film, the first of course being There Will Be Blood.
With Anderson writing and directing and a stellar cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Jena Malone, Sasha Pieterse, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, and so many more, this looks to be something special.
We’ve been eagerly anticipating an Inherent Vice trailer in order to get a peek at the tone of the film, and the trailer certainly didn’t disappoint. It does seem to capture some of the Boogie Nights spirit, but it’s clearly not a rehash of that tone either. Like everything else Anderson has done, Inherent Vice looks like it will be distinctly original.
In a word, this trailer is perfect. Never does it give too much away, but it does show Anderson’s quirkiness that the film will have as well as begin to introduce some of the characters, particularly Phoenix’s lead character.
