Outlander is back tonight with episode 6, “The Garrison Commander.” We’ll see Claire come face-to-face with Black Jack Randall once more.
According to the Starz official synopsis, “The Garrison Commander” features Claire walking a tightrope. After almost two months in the Highlands, Claire has come to realize that the British army can be as treacherous as the Highlanders. She is as much an “outlander” in their presence as she is with the Scots.
The synopsis reads, “Claire’s unexpected meeting with a British general turns tense when Captain Jack Randall arrives. Claire finds herself alone with Randall – a dangerous man determined to uncover her secrets.”
Book fans will be excited to finally see Claire interact with her husband’s, Frank Randall’s, ancestor. Black Jack Randall is an officer in the British army. Although the Frank Randall of the present, by all appearances, is an even-tempered academic who is keen on tracing family history, his ancestor couldn’t be more different. Black Jack Randall, as was seen in the first episode, is known for unprovoked brutality toward men and women. Claire escaped being raped by Black Jack upon their first encounter only because one of the Highlanders rescued her.
As the clip below points out, Claire needs to charm both the English and the Scots to find her way.
The fact remains, is there any amount of charm that is likely to sway the sadistic Black Jack Randall?
Book fans realize that this is going to be a tough episode. It’s a lot darker than we have previously seen. Claire’s been hearing about how brutal this land can be where the British Army is concerned. She’s witnessed the aftereffects. She’s now going to experience it in real time with her own eyes.
If you can’t get enough of Outlander and want some post show fun, join us on Sunday, at 2:00 p.m. for a live episode of Talkin’ Outlander, our Outlander-focused Google Hangout that we host along with the crew from That’s Normal. It’s a fun, slightly irreverent chat as both book fans and non-book fans give their opinions about the most recent episode. Although given the subject matter of this week’s episode, we suspect we’ll be slightly more subdued. We’re averaging over 1,000 viewers a week, so come join in the fun.
We’ll tweet out the link on That’s Normal right before, but you can find the link here once we’re live: http://bit.ly/talkingoutlander.
So, you are invited. Use the hashtag #TalkingOutlander to ask us questions on Twitter, and use the Google Hangout’s fancy Q&A to talk to us as we chat.
