English comedian Ricky Gervais is the latest addition to ABC’s upcoming musical comedy Galavant.
Gervais (The Office) has landed a guest-starring role on the show, according to Entertainment Weekly. His character is reported to be a medieval wizard called Xanax, who is renowned for his potion making and taking his clients on alchemy-induced trips down memory lane.
This won’t be Gervais’ first foray into a fantasy setting, as he appeared as Ferdy the Fence in the 2007 movie adaption of Neil Gaiman’s novel Stardust. Whether there will be any similarities between the two characters will remain to be seen, but we’ll certainly be looking forward to what he’ll bring to the role when the show airs.
Gervais will be joining a slew of recent cast additions, which include Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville, who’ll be swapping his stately home for the high sea as Peter the Pillager, a Pirate King who Galavant will encounter on his journey. John Stamos is also slated to appear on the show as Galavant’s rival. And, finally, Weird Al (yes, you read that correctly), will be playing a monk — though no further details on his role have been given as of yet.
For those of you not familiar with Galavant, the show will follow the titular character (played by Joshua Sasse), a charismatic and much-lorded hero who is out to exact revenge after the villainous King Richard (Psych’s Timothy Omundson) steals away his true love Madalena (Mallory Jansen), and with her his chances of a happily ever after.
With Dan Fogelman (Tangled, Crazy, Stupid, Love) taking the helm as executive producer and writer, and beloved Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast) and lyricist Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid, Tangled) rounding out their team, you know that this show is going to be nothing if not memorable.

You may have also spotted some familiar faces between the sharp writing and catchy music. Rounding out the cast for this “musical comedy fairytale of epic proportions” are Vinnie Jones (Elementary) as the King’s enforcer Gareth, Karen David (Castle) as Princess Isabella, and Luke Youngblood (Harry Potter, Community) as Galavant’s faithful squire Sid.
Galavant currently has no set air date, but is slated to premiere in early 2015 on ABC.
