With Captain America: The Winter Soldier being released on DVD/Blu-ray today, the film’s directors discuss how the third film will change the face of Marvel’s cinematic universe.
In a recent interview, Joe and Anthony Russo reveal that they plan to once again change Marvel’s cinematic universe when they film Captain America 3. The directing duo helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and we saw S.H.I.E.L.D. fall to its knees as Hydra rose to power.
Joe says that the film’s title will reflect what’s to come and that the title “has been in place probably for ten years in his [Kevin Feige’s] brain. It’s all part of the road map that he’s laid out, and it’s all part of the bigger plan.”
When asked by Crave Online if the directing duo had been building up to a third film in The Winter Soldier, Joe said, “Yeah, I think the way Kevin does it is there are big pieces that he knows he wants to build towards, but the way that you get there is open to interpretation and improv a little bit.”
So it seems Marvel president Kevin Feige continues to be a major part of what goes on in each branch of Marvel’s cinematic universe. It’s interesting that Feige has such control over specific storyline details, considering it’s normally up to the writer and directors.
Joe continued, saying, “The big thing we knew we had to deal with in Captain America 2 was the fall of Hydra. Similarly there is a very, very big idea at the center of Captain America 3. But how we get there is all up to us. And I think why Marvel has been so successful is because it’s been such a clear plan, that everything is interconnected and they’re building emotional capital with each movie that you can then trade off of in the next film.”
While Feige has control on many things, Joe Russo says, “Usually it’s just one big idea that alters the universe as a whole in some way, that has interconnectedness that he’s grabbed on to. That’s the case with Cap 3, but as far as villain and story arc and tone, all that stuff is left up to us.”
This is good to hear, since The Winter Soldier was such a success, we want to see where directors Joe and Anthony Russo will take Captain America’s story.
Many fans believe someone may take over Captain America’s role, but it’s difficult to know if the Winter Soldier could take over for Steve Rogers seeing as Chris Evans is set to be in The Avengers: Age of Ultron’s sequel.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is available for purchase on DVD and Blu-ray today, and Captain America 3 will hit theaters May 6, 2016.
