How We Hype is a new, twice-monthly feature on Hypable where we tell you what we’re doing in fandom over the weekend!
Beginning Grant Morrison’s ‘Batman’ run – Louie Schuth
I am set to begin Grant Morrison’s legendary Batman run. This is, of course, the run in the comics where Batman/Bruce Wayne dies. I have read some comics, but I’ve been wanting to read more because my exposure so far has been only minimal. I’ve heard nothing but incredible things about the run, and I can’t wait to completely dive in. I was drawn to the run after hearing that Dick Grayson takes over as Batman, and I fully expect that the complete story will hold more than I can anticipate. I just finished The Black Casebook, the selection of old Batman tales that Morrison based some of his run on, and Batman and Son, and I’ll now be moving on to Batman R.I.P..
Reading ‘My True Love Gave to Me’ anthology – Jen Lamoureux
This weekend I will be reading My True Love Gave to Me, the anthology edited by Stephanie Perkins. Yes, it is holiday book but with amazing authors like Rainbow Rowell, Myra McEntire, Gayle Forman, and David Levithan. It’s hard to resist even in the middle of summer. I plan on finding a lounge chair by the pool, grabbing a frozen hot chocolate and settling in with these holiday stories.
Reading The Maze Runner trilogy- Kristina Lintz
I blame our amazing SDCC coverage, and fellow Hypablers, Karen Rought and Brook Wentz, for finally convincing me to pick up The Maze Runner. I went into it with a vague understanding of the plot – a dystopian world where boys are trapped in a maze, but oh my goodness it is so much more than that. This story is part Lord of the Flies, part Hunger Games, part Divergent, but there is also a part of it that is completely unique and entrancing. I finished the first book last weekend and am well into the second, The Scorch Trials. I’ll probably be onto the third, The Death Cure in a couple of days time. James Dashner’s writing is so riveting and enthralling, you’re instantly captivated.

Attending Creatures Of The Night ‘Teen Wolf’ convention – Natalie Fisher
I’m going to be attending the Sydney date of Creatures of the Night, an Australian Teen Wolf convention featuring four actors from the show. After my great experience at BiteCon in LA earlier this year with the rest of Not Another Teen Wolf Podcast, I’m a bit nervous to be going to this little con in my home city all alone, but I’m especially excited for the appearances by Ian Bohen (Peter) and Holland Roden (Lydia) – two current stars of the show who were not present at my past convention or set visit experience. I’ll be live-tweeting any big news and cool moments over at @NATWPodcast and hopefully meeting some new fandom friends!
Watching ‘Sleepy Hollow’ – Colleen Weiler
I’ve finally given in to my fondness for the legend itself, the cast’s wacky offscreen hijinks, and most importantly, Tom Mison’s beautiful, beautiful face. I read negative reviews for Sleepy Hollow before it premiered, and quickly wrote it off, because I didn’t want to be disappointed by a bad adaptation of the classic story. But since it started airing, I’ve heard great things about the show itself, and have loved every cast appearance, because it seems like Tom Mison, Nicole Beharie, and Orlando Jones are having more fun than all of us. I’m really enjoying it so far, I think the creepy monsters are a great contrast to the hilarity of Ichabod Crane discovering the 21st century. I’m starting my binge-watch now so I’m all caught up in time for season 2’s premiere on September 22.

Giving ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ a second chance – Laura Byrne Cristiano
I’m going to give Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD another try. I plan on binge watching over the next week. Last year I got up to episode 4 or so and was pretty bored with it. The only people holding my attention at that point were Fitz and Simmons, and let’s face it, as fun as they are, it’s not like the whole show revolves around them. From what I’ve heard, from fans of the show, they also agree that the show got off to a really slow start. I’ve heard from a lot of fans who seem to think that once Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out in theaters, it opened up the SHIELD writers to do more things. So, I’m going to give it another shot, and hopefully be caught up by the time the new season airs.
Rewatching ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ at least twice and re-reading ‘The Subtle Knife’- Jimmy Bean
The moment I get home on Friday, I plan on getting together everyone I know who hasn’t seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet, or wants to see it again, and we’re going. And if my nephews want to see it this weekend, well then dammit, I’ll be going a third time. And you know what? Maybe I’ll see it again on Sunday night by myself and laugh/cry because everyone I know thinks I’m insane. Then maybe after that I’ll wander into the theater playing TMNT and then leave after fifteen minutes of watching Megan Fox make that face. You know the one.

I also plan on putting a lot of things on the barbecue as I get through the second book of Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series. Last time I tried to get through the series, I inexplicably stopped halfway through The Subtle Knife and I’ve always regretted it. So I’ll be giving that a redo in between showings of Guardians of the Galaxy and bites of kielbasa sausage. Oh, and maybe I’ll watch The Winter Soldier again in the completely legal way that I’ve been rewatching The Winter Soldier.
Catching up on ‘In The Flesh’ – Tariq Kyle
Having read Harri’s article on why you should watch, I was definitely intrigued with In the Flesh but not enough to pursue it until this past week. I managed to watch the first season in a day (it’s only three episodes!) and I absolutely loved it! So this weekend I’ll be taking a couple hours each day to watch an episode or two of the second season, excited for what it’ll have. I’ve heard so much about this amazing show and the first season was spectacular; I hope the second season is just as awesome! Maybe this is the show I need to finally get me into zombies, then I’ll be able to watch The Walking Dead.
Reading ‘Paper Towns’ – Andrew Sims
With a release date for the film adaptation now set in stone, I’ll be reading the second John Green book to be turned into a movie. I’ve already read The Fault in Our Stars (obviously) and Looking For Alaska, so this’ll be my third Green book. I don’t read too often, and when I do it’s usually because I need to be more knowledgable about something for Hypable. Paper Towns is the perfect example of something I need to know! Even though I don’t know much about the story, I’m already excited for the book… and film.

Watching ‘Outlander’ – Kristen Kranz
After seeing all the hype at San Diego Comic Con and hearing glowing recommendations of the series from a few Hypable staffers, I will be tuning in Saturday night to start Outlander when the kilt drops at 9:00pm EST. I am really excited to see what this series is all about, and I am pretty much spoiler free at this point, so I have no idea what to expect. I’ve been meaning to read the novels, but have not found the motivation to do so, but hopefully the show will jumpstart my inner fangirl and I’ll pick up the first book Sunday afternoon.

Binge-watching ‘Scandal’ – Marama Whyte
I made the huge mistake of starting Scandal on Thursday and I haven’t been able to stop since. Friends have been telling me to watch it for months because of my love of The West Wing and House of Cards, but my dislike of Grey’s Anatomy always put me off. Needless to say, I have now embarked on what I expect will be a lifelong mission to be Olivia Pope. Scandal is totally addictive; yes it is a little like a soap opera, but it is fast paced and fabulous (even if basically all of the characters are awful people – except my girl Olivia).
