Over Comic-Con weekend we sat down with the cast of Fox’s Gotham and discussed the show’s characters and what makes it unique over other DC creations. Check out what they had to say!
What makes ‘Gotham’ unique?
First we talked with executive producer and director Danny Cannon. We were curious about what made Gotham particularly special and different, other than the obvious bit that it’s set in the past. What makes it unique? Cannon replied, “We’re not just exploring the crime of the week with Gotham, the main [part] of the show is that it’s a city that’s falling apart, the lunatics are running the asylum and each criminal is trying to out do the next one until these guys start wearing war paint and start going crazy. That’s a beautiful place to make drama.”
Actor Donal Logue particularly loves that Gotham is not a film. “The story gets to evolve,” he said. “On every show I’ve ever done sometimes a minor character shows up that is supposed to be there for two episodes and ends up [staying longer], and it evolves in a way a film can’t. With a film you have one shot to cover that arc, but here it’s an organic, living being. And we know we’re going to get to Batman putting on a mask and the Penguin as an adult, but where that goes can change and vibrate and evolve.”
If you’re wondering what Gotham‘s first season is going to look like, it’s not solely going to be based on the investigation of the Waynes. Cannon explains, saying “It’s much more about psychologically what it’s done to Bruce Wayne. How is he changing, how is he slowly metamorphosing into what will later become this psychotic person. It’s about how Gordon feels responsible for a kid who has all the money in the world but no one to raise him, and his relationship to Alfred.
What about the other cities?
When asked if we would see other cities pop up in the show, like Metropolis or Starling City, Cannon didn’t refuse the idea. “We want to get through this first season, but we have a wonderful relationship with Geoff Johns at DC. So far the reaction has been good, to that we’re creating a legitimate Gotham story with legitimate police and criminals, so the sky is the limit. If people buy into this world and the world is credible enough and exciting enough, I don’t see why we can’t take a train or a plane somewhere.”
What about ‘Gotham’ is most exciting?
We’d asked writer Bruno Heller to tell us what excites him the most about Gotham, and what he looks forward to exploring, to which he responded, “I think in the pilot what I know people will be impressed by is Robin Taylor who plays Penguin, he delivers such a bravura performance. And Danny shoots him so well, I feel like a star is born there. I also feel like young David Mazouz is a genuine great actor on the highest level, so it’s beautiful to watch him blossom.”
