Legendary just announced a mysterious King Kong movie titled Skull Island.
At the very end of their Comic-Con panel, that included the introduction of a few monsters that will be featured in Godzilla 2, Legendary dropped a bombshell. Saying that they had “been tinkering around with one thing,” Legendary unveiled the title to another movie: Skull Island.
Skull Island is of course the island where King Kong lives, first appearing the original King Kong, released in 1933. The island has been featured in every King Kong remake since, including Peter Jackson’s 2005 King Kong. In addition to being the home of King Kong, Skull Island is the home to various other creatures.
Legendary has revealed that Skull Island will be a King Kong origin story, and we’ll finally learned how King Kong became King Kong. There was no writer or director announcement (they probably don’t have anyone attached as of yet), but Legendary did reveal one thing: the movie will be released on November 4, 2016.
The announcement came with a mysterious trailer. The footage first looked like it was going to be a promo for Universal’s Jurassic World because of a shot of an island, birds flying through trees, and the feel of an animal-ruled kingdom. But at the end we saw King Kong beating his chest and a title card came up for a new movie called Skull Island, confirming the new Kong movie.
With Legendary making Godzilla, its sequel, and now a King Kong movie called Skull Island, it’s clear they’re amping up their monster world. There has been no indication of this, but we wouldn’t be surprised at all if they eventually announce Godzilla vs. King Kong, a movie that would be sure to be a major box office hit.
