The first trailer for Sundance hit Whiplash has been released. The movie stars Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons, and Melissa Benoist.
Whiplash premiered this January at the Sundance Film Festival and was a major hit. Not only was it the festival’s premiere film, but it won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize in the dramatic category. Reviews out of the festival were equally impressive. The movie currently holds a 94% on the movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Whiplash stars Miles Teller as Andrew Neyman, a young jazz musician who wishes to achieve greatness. He studies under an instructor played by J.K. Simmons. Simmons’ Terence Fletcher character is a ruthless instructor and pushes Andrew Neyman in extreme ways.
Critics have oft cited Simmons’ performance, and pieces of that performance is seen in the trailer. Simmons character yells ferociously at Teller’s for “rushing,” calling the student a “single tear” person and a “worthless pansy-ass.” What Simmons’ character says in full in the movie is reportedly way worse than that. This makes sense given the for all audiences nature of the trailer.
During Sundance, critics were suggesting that Simmons could receive a supporting actor nomination at the Oscars. This still seems possible.
Damien Chazelle wrote and directed Whiplash which is based on his award winning short film of the same name. He’ll reteam with Miles Teller on La La Land, a musical which also stars Emma Watson.
Official synopsis:
Andrew Neyman, a young jazz drummer who attends one of the best music schools in the country under the tutelage of the school’s fearsome maestro of jazz named Terence Fletcher struggles to make it as a top jazz drummer.
