Sony has announced that Amazing Spider-Man 3’s release date is set for 2018 and their villain spinoff, Sinister Six, will hit theaters on November 11, 2016.
Deadline reports that Sony has finally given some specific release dates to the third Amazing Spider-Man film, as well as the first spinoff film featuring the Sinister Six villains.
Back in December Sony hired Drew Goddard to pen the Sinister Six script, but a later report revealed that Goddard would also be directing the Spider-Man spinoff.
Drew Goddard came to fame by serving as a writer and producer of two incredibly popular TV shows, Alias and Lost. He also wrote for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which means he has ties to someone very important to Marvel.
Now that we have some official release dates for Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Sinister Six, it’ll be exciting to see what Goddard starts to do with the material available to him.
He also wrote Cabin in the Woods with Avengers‘ director Joss Whedon, which made his transition into being hired to write Marvel’s Daredevil series on Netflix seem like the perfect fit. But that wouldn’t last, as he left the project to focus on Sony’s Sinister Six adaptation.
Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group prexy Doug Belgrad says, “With Sinister Six in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016.”
As for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, it was originally rumored to be hitting theaters on June 10, 2016. But Sony has now set Uncharted for that slot and have moved Amazing Spider-Man 3 to an early 2018 release.
Marc Webb will be directing Amazing Spider-Man 3, and while it was assumed that Webb would finish up the trilogy, it’s more interesting that Sony is planning to release one Spider-Man spinoff per year.
There have been some rumblings that the Spider-Man franchise is in a bit of disarray, but with Sinister Six now getting an official release date, we feel a bit better about what Sony has planned.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Sinister Six, it was created by Doctor Octopus after he realized that he would require assistance from Spider-Man’s other enemies in order to defeat him.
After a recent defeat, he contacts every known supervillain that had crossed paths with Spider-Man previously, but only Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and Sandman would respond to his request. This team of supervillains would team up to battle Spider-Man in multiple different storylines.
Reports suggest that Sinister Six director Drew Goddard is a “self-professed comic book buff,” and is more than excited to be writing and directing multiple comic book films. The series will start production soon and will be part of Sony’s future of Spider-Man spinoffs.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hit theaters this past May and took in $706 million worldwide and it looks like Sony wants to continue keeping the webslinger and his foes in the spotlight over the next five years.
