Fargo was only supposed to be a limited series, but due to its success FX has renewed it for season 2.
The Fargo TV series was a big risk for FX. Would a TV series adaptation of such a well regarded movie be able to have a life of its own? The answer to that question turned out to be in the affirmative, and Fargo went on to receive 18 Emmy nominations.
Because of that, FX has wasted no time in renewing the series for a second, 10 episode season. Much like HBO’s True Detective, Fargo season 2 will feature an all-new cast of characters, an all-new time period, and an all-new “real crime” story. We’ll be sad to see the fantastic cast from the first season go, but it’ll be great to see a new cast too. Fargo season 1 gave us breakout star Allison Tolman, and we can’t wait to see who they’ll find for season 2. With big stars like Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton in season 1, we might see some big star power in season 2 as well.
“We could not be more proud of Fargo,” said FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. “Noah’s audacious, bordering on hubristic riff on my favorite Coen brothers film earned 18 Emmy nominations – the most for a single program in our history.”
The announcement came at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. There it was revealed that Fargo season 2 would come Fall 2015 at the earliest.
Also announced today was Louie season 5. This was much less up in the air as Louie has been one of the more critically successful shows for the entirety of it’s run, and writer, director, and star Louis C.K. has previously said that Louie would last “seven or eight years, tops.”
Louie season 5 will consist of seven episodes – half the number of episodes in season 4. It will premiere in spring 2015.
“Louie‘s fourth season was once again groundbreaking. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking — always thought provoking,” said Landgraf. “The show went to narrative and cinematic places no comedy has gone before and we look forward to seeing what Louis comes up with next.”
