In Game of Thrones season 4, we lost a lot of great characters. At least we can still check out some of the actors’ other work!
Now that Game of Thrones season 4 is over, we have to wait almost a year for new episodes.
But there are some familiar faces that won’t return to our screens in Game of Thrones season 5. This year saw a lot of major deaths, and while we might not miss all the characters, we’ll certainly miss the actors.
To help fill the Game of Thrones void, and to remember those characters who left us this year, we suggest some of their other movies and TV shows. There’s enough here to last a few months!
Jack Gleeson (Joffrey)
Ah, Joffrey. We will never feel such intense dislike for another Game of Thrones character as we did for you. However, Jack Gleeson’s presence on the show will be sorely missed.
The talented young actor has previously stated that when his run on Game of Thrones ended, he would be taking a break from the industry.
But there are still ways to see Gleeson in other, less sadistic roles. Most Thrones fans know of his cameo in Batman Begins (2005), where he played a little boy whom Batman saved. The moment is now a popular meme, which bemoaned the fact that Batman could have ended the Joffrey tyranny before it even began.
In the film A Shine of Rainbows (2009), a slightly older Gleeson plays Seamus, a dark-haired (!) boy who befriends main character Tomás (John Bell), who is adopted and taken to a small island with his new parents (played by Connie Nielsen and Aidan Quinn).
And in 2010, Gleeson starred in the movie All Good Children, where his character Dara and his brother Eoin (David Brazil) start a new life in France. In the movie, Dara falls in love with Bella (Imogen Jones), and begins to behave slightly Joffrey-esque when she doesn’t return his affections…
Kate Dickie (Lysa Arryn)
Kate Dickie has made a few very memorable appearances as Lady Arryn over the course of the series. Her demise (falling through the moon door) was haunting, and while it is sad to see another Tully killed off, it opened up a whole new path for Sansa (Sophie Turner) and Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen).
Dickie has three movies coming up that sound like they could be the titles of the last three ASOIAF books: A Northern Soul, The Silent Storm, and Take it Back and Start All Over.
While we wait for those, you might (not) remember Dickie from Prometheus, where she played Ford, one of the ill-fated crew members.
Back in 2000, Dickie’s career took off when she appeared in the first episode of Tinsel Town. Since then she has aimed to take on complicated, very diverse roles, which range from acting in the 2010 horror movie Outcast (also starring Karen Gillan), to appearing alongside James Cosmo (Commander Mormont on Game of Thrones) in Donkeys (2010).
If you want to truly experience Dickie’s emotional range, we recommend Filth and For Those in Peril, both released in 2013.
Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell)
We only got to enjoy Oberyn Martell for one short season, but luckily Pedro Pascal has had a very versatile career.
Not only did he have a very memorable (and different!) guest spot on Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Eddie in season 4, but the actor has made his way around the TV scene. Pascal had recurring roles on The Good Wife as Nathan Landry and The Mentalist as Agent Pike, and has also appeared on Brothers & Sisters, Lights Out, Nikita, and Graceland (to name a few). Pascal also appeared in The Adjustment Bureau (2011).
In 2015, Pascal is slated to star in the new series Narcos, which chronicles the life of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura). Pascal will play Javier Peña.
Later this year, you can find Pascal starring in a number of different projects, including the TV movie Exposed, which also features Ben Barnes of Narnia fame. In the movie, Pascal plays an investigative journalist, who may not be doing everything by the book. Exposed will be released very soon, so keep your eyes… er… peeled.
Rose Leslie (Ygritte)
One of this season’s most upsetting departures was Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington) lady love Ygritte, played by Rose Leslie.
Luckily, TV fans have an easy way to get more from the charming actress: as you probably know, Leslie got her big break in Downton Abbey. She played one of the central figures, servant Gwen Dawson, in the first season of the show.
In the series, Gwen quickly forms a bond with the forward-thinking Lady Sybil, who helps her get a job as a secretary. Obviously Leslie’s role here is wildly different from the one on Game of Thrones, but no less enjoyable.
Leslie has a couple of interesting upcoming projects, including the horror/thriller movie Honeymoon, which you can see a clip from here:
