Reports suggest that Ben Affleck will be playing Batman in a standalone film set to hit theaters in 2019.
When Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder said he wanted to go with an “older/grittier” Batman, we didn’t know he meant a 50+ year-old. But that’s where we’re headed if the recent rumor that Warner Bros. plans to release a solo Batman film in 2019.
The rumor also suggests that the title of the solo film will be The Batman, which is almost as strange as the release date report. While Affleck will only be 46 in 2019, we imagine he’ll be thinking twice about doing stunts as Batman in five years.
We got our first look at Ben Affleck in the new Batsuit a month ago and he looked pretty incredible in the new suit. We also got our first look at the new Batmobile, which looked like a combination of the ’90s Batmobile and the tumbler seen in director Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.
It was exciting that we finally got our first looks at Batman v Superman, as fans have been very curious about how different the Batsuit and Batmobile would be from Christian Bale’s, which is still fresh in the minds of the majority of Batman fans. We can’t wait to see Batman standing next to Superman, though. That should be one epic shot from the film.
As for the solo Batman film rumor that reports that we’ll see Affleck in the suit in 2019, it’s not entirely crazy, but it’s still quite a ways off. The report suggests that we most likely won’t even hear about it during Comic-Con and our recent report concerning WB’s lineup only talked about a Man of Steel sequel, but not a solo Batman film.
We’re definitely interested in a solo Batman film and after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters in 2016, we imagine Warner will want to get to work on their solo films, but a three year gap between the two films seems like a stretch.
We think WB needs to get a solo Batman film out much quicker, so that they can rebuild the character with Affleck in the seat so that fans can get used to him in the role prior to Justice League hitting theaters.
Justice League is set to hit theaters in May, 2017, so there’s not exactly a lot of time for a solo Batman film between it and Batman v Superman, but it seems like the studio is planning so far out that it’s possible we could be seeing some different actors in the roles by then.
Affleck has a promising directing career right now, so we don’t know how he’ll feel about jumping in and out of the Batsuit over the next decade.
