In a recent interview, Lorne Michaels, the long-time showrunner of SNL, suggested that there will be some important cast changes happening heading into next season.
Speaking to Deadline, Michaels noted that this season was a tough one with losing four of SNL’s leading men last season and then its fifth mid-season when Seth Meyers moved over to host Late Night:
Losing the fifth leading man in Seth (in early February) was a hard thing, in the middle of a season, because there’s only one other time in the 39 years that we ever changed Update in the middle of a season, and that was Norm Macdonald to Colin Quinn.
When asked if there would be more changes and structural difference with SNL next season, Michaels was quick to assert that the late night comedy show would definitely be continuing to change:
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. We’re still in the middle of rebuilding. So, there will be changes this year.
It was recently reported that cast member Nasim Pedrad would likely not be returning to SNL next season due to her commitment to the Fox comedy Mulaney, telling an audience at an ATX Television Festival panel last weekend “as far as I know, I’m in L.A. now.”
After last season’s nearly week-by-week changes, SNL will look to solidify a respectable and reputable cast as it heads into its record-breaking and historic 40th season.
What are your thoughts about the ongoing changes happening at Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center? Are there any stand out cast members that you couldn’t imagine leaving SNL?
