Lois Lowry’s The Giver is the latest dystopian novel to get the silver screen treatment and the newest trailer for the upcoming film features a whole lot of Merly Streep as the story’s controlling Chief Elder. Watch it below!
Academy Award winning actress, Meryl Streep takes center stage in an all new extended trailer for upcoming book-to-film adaptation, The Giver, based on the Newberry Award-winning book by Lois Lowry.
“From great suffering, came a solution: communities, serene, beautiful places where disorder became harmony.” says Streep, who plays controlling authority figure, Chief Elder in the upcoming dystopian film that is set in a society where emotions, privacy, and colors have all been taken away from its citizens.
From there, the trailer picks up speed as viewers are introduced to main character, Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) who starts to question why he and his fellow citizens don’t have the freedom to choose. Jonas’ curious nature only grows stronger when he is selected to learn all the Giver (Jeff Bridges)– a man who possesses all the memories of how the world used to be– has to teach.
Also starring Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), Odeya Rush (Goosebumps), Katie Holmes (Days and Nights), and Taylor Swift (The Lorax), The Giver hits theaters on August 15, 2014.
