Netflix and Dreamworks have announced that the How to Train Your Dragon spinoff television series Dragons is moving from Cartoon Network to Netflix, and a slew of new episodes are in the works.
The new Dragons episodes will bridge the gap between the original How to Train Your Dragon and the sequel which is hitting theaters in June. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to watch the updated show until 2015.
The Netflix episodes will weave “a continuous storyline,” according to a press release. “The television series works in tandem with the feature films and DVD specials, allowing fans to delve deeper into dragon lore. From the origin of Hiccup’s new flight suit and the secrets of his dragon blade to the young Vikings budding romance with Astrid, DreamWorks Dragons on Netflix gives viewers rich details of the larger narrative with the introduction of new dragons, exotic places and worlds unknown.”
Voice actors Jay Baruchel (Hiccup), America Ferrera (Astrid), and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are all lending their voices to the television series just as they are for the films.
How to Train Your Dragon is the latest series from Dreamworks to come to Netflix. The studio has also committed to series for Turbo, Madagascar, and Puss In Boots for the instant streaming service.
In recent months Netflix has been expanding its original series offerings to entice customers to come to them for exclusive material. The Dreamworks shows are their strongest foray into reaching children, because the majority of their other original series are geared towards adults.
Despite the Dragon deal, we’re sorry to report that the original movie isn’t available on Netflix for instant streaming. We know this because we tried to watch it the other day ahead of the sequel’s June 13 release.
