Marvel has found its Daredevil star in Boardwalk Empire’s British actor Charlie Cox.
Just after Marvel lost Drew Goddard as Daredevil’s writer/director, they hired Steven S. DeKnight, who is best known for his work on Spartacus. Now the studio has cast Charlie Cox as Daredevil in their new Netflix series.
THR confirms that Cox will star as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer who will fight crime during the series’ 13 episodes on Netflix.
Cox has been cast in multiple pilots in the last few years, with only his role on Boardwalk Empire getting greenlit. He was on Boardwalk Empire as Owen for two seasons.
He’s also known for his starring role as Tristan Thorne in Stardust. Now he’ll be heading to New York to work with Marvel and Netflix as they’ve paired to do multiple comic book based shows over the next few years.
NYC will become the center of Marvel’s Netflix universe as Disney CEO Bob Iger and Governor Andrew Cuomo announced back in February that the state had decided to accommodate the studio’s needs.
Netflix and Marvel have 60 hour-long episodes planned, with intentions of making a big push into the niche which Netflix has claimed as its own. There will be 13 episodes for each of the four main characters which include Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist.
They also announced that there will be between four to eight mini-series which revolve around The Defenders team, linking all the character’s stories together once each character’s origins has been developed.
While Daredevil’s film adaptation was critically panned when Ben Affleck portrayed the character back in 2003, we imagine a Netflix series will be wildly different than a film about the Marvel character. It’ll also be interesting to see how Marvel interweaves the characters between the four new Marvel storylines.
While the show’s previous director, Drew Goddard, was a “self-professed Daredevil buff,” the show’s new director Steven S. DeKnight is more than capable of helming Marvel’s first Netflix series. The series will start production sometime this year and we imagine fans are excited to see Marvel make a successful transition into having a large presence on Netflix.
