The King of Hell will be returning to Supernatural full time in season 10.
The promotion to series regular for fan favorite actor Mark Sheppard comes on the heels of Supernatural‘s shocking season 9 finale, which saw Dean transform into a demon in the final moments.
Sheppard, who plays the demon Crowley, will appear in an unspecified number of episodes next season, though based on his monologue in the finale’s final moments, he will clearly be playing a large role in season 10 and Dean’s adjustment to becoming the thing he and his brother have hunted all their lives.
In season 9, Dean took on the Mark of Cain in order to wield the First Blade, the only weapon capable of killing a Knight of Hell. Though the Blade allowed Dean to kill Abaddon, it began twisting him and deepening his bloodlust.
In the season finale, Dean confronted Metatron, only to be overpowered. Metatron stabbed him, and he died in Sam’s arms before reviving with the black eyes of a demon some time later as Crowley watched on.
Alongside the dynamic between Crowley and Dean, season 9 also set up potential future stories between Crowley and his son, Gavin. Abaddon brought Gavin to the present day to exploit Crowley’s lingering humanity.
Knowing that his son was destined to board a ship from Scotland to America that sank along the way, Crowley told Gavin to live a life in the present day against the advice of the Winchesters.
Sheppard joins Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins as series regulars in season 10.
Supernatural will air this fall on Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
