The stakes were higher than ever on this week’s results show, as season 6’s top 5 contestants found out whether or not they would be competing in next week’s finale.
Emotions were understandably high for this week’s Voice results show, as the contestants would find out whether or not they would be competing in next week’s finale. All five contestants seemed to run the gamut from manic happiness to “I’m going to vomit” levels of terror throughout the night.
Jake Worthington was the first finalist revealed, and the emotional Jake wrapped coach Blake in a tight bear hug. After Josh Kaufman was revealed to be the second finalist saved, sending Usher through to the finals as well, it came down to a ladies night in the bottom three, as Kristen Merlin, Kat Perkins, and Christina Grimmie were left to sing for their lives, for a chance to be saved by America to compete in next week’s finals.
Guest Performances
Rascal Flatts
Friends of the The Voice Rascal Flatts kicked off the semi-finals results show with a fun performance of their new song “Rewind” off of their new album of the same name, which is in stores now. They always put on a great show, and this performance was a great way to get everyone into a nice upbeat summer-y mood.
Jacquie Lee
Season 5 runner-up Jacquie Lee took the stage to perform her new single, “Broken Ones.” The performance certainly served as a great reminder of why we all voted for her so many times last season, because this girl’s voice is still phenomenal, especially for a teenager. And she’s still just as adorable and bubbly as ever, though her diminutive frame looked weighed down by layers upon layers of black and leather.
Will Champlin
Season 5 finalist Will Champlin has not changed a bit, and that’s a good thing. He’s still so mellow and somewhat awkward when he’s just chatting with Carson, but when he takes the stage, in this case to perform his new single “Eye of the Pyramid,” he takes it to another level, and he’s got a killer voice. The sequined shirt seemed a little bit out of character, but maybe he’s turning over a new leaf, sartorially.
Tessanne Chin
Season 5 winner Tessanne Chin returned to The Voice stage to show this season’s finalists how it’s done. Her new single “Everything Reminds Me of You” is very catchy, and Tessanne was just as sassy as she ever was. The only inexplicable thing about her performance was the dozens of neon road signs that served as the backdrop to her performance. I guess they were among the “everything” that reminds me of you?
‘The Voice’ Confessional
This week’s Voice Confessional was all about wishes and secret desires, and as it turns out, Usher wishes he was a magician, Blake wishes he could whistle with his fingers, Josh wishes he had pro-level basketball skills, and Shakira wishes her breasts were not-so small and humble, and perhaps more easily confused with mountains?
Sing For Your Life
Kristen Merlin
Kristen Merlin brought out Carrie Underwood’s powerhouse “Blown Away” for her last chance performance, and it was certainly a great choice to showcase the quality of her voice. However, she has had so many strong performances that were more heartfelt, and earned her a lot of votes in the past. It’s surprising she wouldn’t choose to capitalize on that audience connection before the Twitter vote.
Kat Perkins
Continuing the unintentional Carrie Underwood tribute, Team Adam’s Kat Perkins took on “Good Girl,” and laid it out there with her patented Kat charisma, looking like she’s spent her whole life onstage in front of millions of people. While Kristen captured a more country side of Carrie, Kat went full on rock star, in her third consecutive attempt to win a last-minute save from America.
Christina Grimmie
So not everyone got the Carrie Underwood memo, I guess, because Christina Grimmie chose One Republic’s “Apologize” for her last chance performance. It’s a song we’ve all heard countless times, but Christina put everything she had into it, and showed America that she deserves to stick around for the finals.
Results
After all three girls performed, the final choice was in America’s hands, or rather America’s tweets, as we had one last chance at a last-minute save for one of these three contestants. As in previous weeks, we were able to watch the status of the Twitter votes during the commercial break, which showed a majority for Christina, and only an embarrassing 1% for Kristen. After the break, Carson said they had some trouble with the graphic, but it was still no great surprise when he revealed that Christina was saved.
The Voice season 6 finals air next Monday at 8 p.m, with your season 6 winner revealed on Tuesday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
