New Girl has officially made Coach a permanent feature as Fox promotes Damon Wayans Jr. to series regular for upcoming season 4.
After spending a majority of New Girl season 3 as a special guest, Damon Wayans Jr. will officially be part of the regular cast next season. This comes to no one’s surprise as his arc in the series has made him a staple to the story line.
Wayans originally appeared in the New Girl pilot episode as one of the main characters. However, when Happy Endings got a surprise renewal he couldn’t take the role once New Girl was picked up. Instead of re-casting his role, Fox wrote him out and brought in Winston.
He got a second chance on the series when Happy Endings was cancelled and Fox signed him for a six episode guest appearance. Which quickly turned into a role lasting the rest of the season 3 for a total of 17 episodes.
Both Fox and New Girl are clearly impressed with Wayans’ fit in the show. Executive producer Brett Baer telling The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s hard to balance six characters, let alone five, but he has worked so well with so many different people. We’ve had him do stories with everybody and he just killed it.”
That makes five roommates living in a four bedroom loft, so it will be interesting to see how next season plays out. With Jess and Nick now broken up, and Schmidt in his old room it seems some shuffling is in order.
Are you glad to hear Damon Wayans Jr. will be back next season on ‘New Girl’?
