Following the news that Shailene Woodley probably won’t reprise her role as MJ due to her commitment to the Divergent film series, I have been inspired to compile a list of potential candidates who could portray the Earth-1610 version of Mary Jane Watson.
It won’t be Kirsten Dunst, pictured above as Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-Man series starring Tobey Maguire.
Below are my choices for Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man.
Kaya Scodelario
Starting off in the hit British TV show Skins as “bad girl” Effy Stonem, Scodelario exhibited her acting abilities to much acclaim but is going to be gaining much more recognition in the upcoming YA film The Maze Runner. Judging by the trailer, the story is set somewhere in America as she (and her co-stars) speaks in a very convincing American accent. Add that to her apparent acting talent and she’s got a pretty good chance at portraying a Mary Jane we’d be impressed by!
Dakota Blue Richards
Dakota made her film debut playing the fiery and stubborn Lyra Belaqua; portraying her so well, she received the Critic’s Choice Award for Best Young Actress. Like Kaya before her, she too was featured in the teen drama series Skins as the timid Frankie Fitzgerald (however, progressing into a more rebellious and outspoken character). Given the fact the filmmakers of this Spider-Man series are drawing from the Earth-1610 version of Mary Jane who is shown to be a very vocal and passionate young woman, with hot temper on occasion, Dakota appears to be a promising choice for the fiery redhead.
Dianna Agron
I must admit, one of the reasons why Dianna Agron stood out to me was her voice. I couldn’t help but imagine her recite the famous line “face it, Tiger, you just hit the jackpot” in her soft yet very sultry voice and getting chills from how perfect it would sound. Apart from that she has definitely shown herself to be a very capable and likable actress after appearing in the hit musical show Glee as Quinn Fabray; initially playing the mean cheerleader of McKinley High but developing into a more human character with depth, never letting go of that feisty-ness she possessed upon being introduced into the show. This passion combined with Agron’s naturally chill personality is something she can undoubtedly bring to the character.
Karen Gillan
Like Agron, Karen Gillan seems to effortlessly exude this natural likability that bewitched the many fans of Doctor Who after winning the role of Amelia “Amy” Pond, “a sassy lady, funny and passionate” as described by Gillan. She received much acclaim from fans and six awards for her portrayal of the character which speaks very positively for her acting abilities. With regard to accents, she displayed a pretty flawless American accent in the trailer for her newly-released horror film Oculus which has gotten a considerable amount of positive reactions. I think it’s safe to say only good things are to come of Gillan’s endeavors in the acting business, both for her and us as viewers!
Rachel Hurd-Wood
While I don’t know much of Rachel Hurd-Wood as I haven’t seen much of her work, but after carrying out some research, she seems to be making a slow albeit steady journey into the acting industry, gaining recognition from her role (and film debut) in the 2003 adaption of Peter Pan as well as the 2006 adaption of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. This praise definitely shines a positive light on her abilities as an actor. Personally, I feel her portrayal as teenager Corrie Mackenzie in the Australian film drama film Tomorrow, When the War Began further showed her skills with regard to accents (yeah, big surprise, I’m pretty particular about accents but with good reason especially due to the British actresses I’ve chosen).
Lily Collins
While I haven’t seen much of Lily Collins’ work, I think it’s safe to say that she definitely has the potential to give great performances as she further pursues different acting roles. I have seen her portrayal of Clary Fray in the film adaption of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and I must I was definitely satisfied with how Clary was depicted but I do feel it could have been a little better (don’t even get me started on the film, but that’s beside the point). She acted out Clary’s stubborn and tough attributes pretty well in addition to the more vulnerable side to a girl who’s completely inexperienced with this fantastical yet dangerous world of demons and warlocks. I think it would definitely be interesting to see how well she would perform in the role of Mary Jane.
Holland Roden
I was first introduced to Holland Roden through Teen Wolf. In it, she plays the brilliantly sassy genius Lydia Martin. Although her character was introduced as the show’s popular high school student, she was gradually given more depth, more of a human side to her which gave Roden the opportunity to show how well she can really act. By accident, thanks to my sister, an avid watcher of Criminal Minds, I had the pleasure of watching her pretty convincing performance as a traumatized victim held hostage by a troubled woman who was previously the subject of her father’s abuse. I have no doubt in my mind she could play a really amazing Mary Jane after seeing how well she can perform the many different kinds of people she’s been given so far.
