The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was a box office smash when it hit theaters back in December, and now it has been released on DVD and Blu-ray. We take a look at the film on Blu-ray, as well as the bonus features included.
The sequel is available on Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack for $105.43, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack for $44.95, on Blu-ray Combo Pack for $35.99 and on 2-disc DVD Special Edition for $28.98.
The Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack includes two Gates of Erebor replica bookends from the Noble Collection and features the theatrical version of the film in 3D hi-definition, hi-definition and standard definition.
There’s only 25,000 Limited Editions available for purchase in the U.S. Check out the bonus features, as well as the Limited Edition packaging (click to enlarge):
The film itself looks great on Blu-ray and it’s a solid second chapter to Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy. It’s an improvement from the first film, but it continues to lack the epic nature that The Lord of the Rings trilogy was able to capture.
The film picks up in the third act and Benedict Cumberbatch does an excellent job voicing Smaug the dragon, along with his good friend Martin Freeman who shines during their scenes together in The Lonely Mountain.
While the additional footage included on the discs is a bit light, we look forward to seeing director Peter Jackson’s Extended Edition which will include eight hours of behind-the-scenes footage from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The Extended Edition will be released this December, when the last film in the trilogy hits theaters.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hit theaters on December 13, 2013. It is the second film in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy based on the novels by revered author J.R.R Tolkien. The final movie in The Hobbit trilogy, There and Back Again, will hit theaters December 17, 2014.
