Universal presented the first footage from Fifty Shades of Grey during their panel at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this afternoon, and the reactions from attendees are in.
The general consensus from those who turned out for Universal’s panel is that the footage depicted the romantic side of the story rather than the sexual aspects.
Whether this is because Fifty Shades of Grey will turn down the raunchy material for theatergoers or they’re playing it safe for this particular audience is currently unknown.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the clips focused on lead stars Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) and Christian (Jamie Dornan). “The scenes included the characters meeting in Grey’s office. ‘Mr. Grey will see you now,’ says they [sic] receptionist. They [sic] trailer showed them meeting in coffee shops and the hardware store, all familiar scenes in the book.”
“While based [on] E.L. James’ erotic novel, the film looks more romantic than sexual,” the report continues. “There was a brief glimpse of Johnson wearing a black blindfold in a red room, but most of the focus was on the courting of the couple.”
Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley called the film the next “iconic screen romance,” according to reports.
Here are a few reactions from Twitter, which were surprisingly positive:
@elmayimbe yeah it seems pretty loyal to the book. a lot more about love than sex. maybe had to play it safe w/trailer.

Fifty Shades of Grey is set to hit theaters this February just in time for Valentine’s Day. Though fans will surely be clamoring to see the footage screened today in Las Vegas, the public will very likely have to wait until the teaser trailer debuts.
CinemaCon is held annually for movie theater owners, though press are invited to attend as well.
Elsewhere during Universal’s panel, footage from Fast and Furious 7 and Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut Unbroken premiered.
