The moody cover art for The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey – the sequel to The 5th Wave – has been unveiled today.
The cover art for The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey has been revealed today by USA Today. The sequel to last September’s spine-tingling The 5th Wave will continue the story of young love and terror in the time of alien invasions.
The cover of The Infinite Sea is bathed in moody tones of blue, a contrast to The 5th Wave‘s sickly yellow colors. The location is notably different as well. Though the cover of the first book featured its main character Cassie in a forest, author Rick Yancey notes, “in this one, it’s more of an interior, where it’s almost like a tunnel.” This location, Yancey teases, will be a significant element in the story of The Infinite Sea.
In the interview that accompanies the cover reveal, Yancey drops other hints about what readers can expect from The Infinite Sea. The story will pick up a few weeks after the conclusion of The 5th Wave, as Cassie, her little brother Sam, and would-be alien, recruits Ben and Ringer try to survive the oncoming winter. The invaders – dubbed ‘Others’ – “are using weather itself as a weapon,” Yancey says.
In addition, The Infinite Sea “will follow the same core structurally as the first book in that it will be a story told from different points of view,” the author promises. New characters will be introduced – some trustworthy, others less so – and the ruthless-beyond-her-years character of Ringer will become more prominent. “She makes Cassie look like a Girl Scout,” Yancey jokes.
The alien invaders, so integral to the plot, will remain mysterious, though more will be revealed. General Vosch, an invader with close ties to Ben and Ringer, will feature heavily as a villain, and readers haven’t seen the last of Cassie’s hunter and rescuer, Evan Walker.
“[Fans] will be absolutely shocked — shocked — by Evan’s fate,” Yancey promises, suggesting that he is just as maniacal as the alien invasion he pens.
The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey will hit bookstores on September 16 of this year.
