Sure, watching our favorite film industry people and movies earn arguably well-deserved awards is a good reason to watch the Oscars this Sunday, but we have a few ulterior motives.
We hate to say it, but without all of the entertaining (and sometimes hilarious) moments, watching the Oscars would be a bit of a bore. We’re thankful for all of the amazing films being honored and we hope that the ones we enjoyed walk away with a few awards, but sometimes the Oscars take themselves way too seriously.
Everyone’s dressed to the point of possibly being overdressed, booze isn’t as readily available to the guests as it is during the Golden Globes, and all of the scripted moments are obnoxiously sterile.
So, we take pleasure in the little things. Unscripted moments, passionate performances, unfortunate camera shots… We find enjoyment anywhere we can get it.
Here are a few of the real reasons why we’re going to be watching the 2014 Oscars on Sunday.
Idina Menzel’s vocal performance
We can’t wait for the chills to run up and down our spines while listening to Idina Menzel’s live performance of “Let It Go.” Sure, we’ll most likely be singing along with her, but we’ll still be able to hear most of her performance. We think… Anyway, this is one performance that we’re definitely not going to want to miss. There’s no doubt that it’s going to be epic.
JLaw and her antics
She’s just so unpredictable. Not to mention charming, hilarious, relatable… We could go on and on. Lately, Jennifer Lawrence has been one of the most interesting and entertaining parts about award shows. She has the best red carpet moments, not to mention speeches and graceful movements. We’re waiting on pins and needles to see what she says and does this Sunday.
To catch glimpses of Nicholas Hoult’s face
Speaking of JLaw, NICHOLAS HOULT. When we caught our first glance at this extremely handsome man at the Golden Globes, we had a hard time keeping ourselves from drooling. He just looked so dapper. Since JLaw is such a hot commodity and a pretty beloved star (not to mention a nominee this year), we’re hoping that she’ll be allowed to bring her handsome boyfriend as her date to the big event. Then, since the cameras love Jennifer Lawrence, we’ll be able to catch glimpses of his beautiful mug all night.
Meryl Streep’s facial expressions
One word: Priceless. She has all of the best facial expressions for all of the best (and worst) moments. Her expressions perfectly convey what we’re all thinking during awkward or ridiculous times. They’re also really just a source of constant amusement. If the cameras don’t cut to her often during this year’s ceremony, we’ll be sorely disappointed.
To see if award winners panic when they get played off
You know it’s true. We all sit there listening to the speeches while also secretly counting down to when the “play off” music is going to kick in. While it can be kind of annoying during the really good or heartfelt speeches (or even the really entertaining ones), it’s always entertaining to see what Hollywood’s best do when they’re put under pressure by some instrumental music.
All of the Avengers coming together and looking dapper
The theme of the 2014 Oscars is “Movie Heroes,” for goodness sake. How could the Avengers not make an appearance? Sure, the official statement from the Academy is that the theme is meant to honor real life heroes as well as those on screen. But who cares about real heroes when attractive looking superheroes are on our screens? A few of the Avengers presented at last year’s Oscars, so why couldn’t they all attend this year? After all, Age of Ultron is a little over a year away. It’s never too soon to start promoting!
Waiting for one of our picks to win an award
We all love that feeling when the person or movie we root for wins something. Don’t deny it. But you know what’s even better than having correctly “predicted” an award winner? Rubbing it in your friends’ faces of course! Isn’t that what makes watching the ceremony fun? Even though most of us haven’t gotten around to seeing all of the nominees, we can still cheer endlessly for our favorites and then ruthlessly badger our friends when our picks win and theirs lose.
To see if we need to continue using the awardless Leo meme
As funny as we find the “Leo hasn’t won an Oscar” meme, we’re really pulling for him to win this year. Yes, it’s a pretty tight race, but we think he can do it. However, how could we ever attempt to be the first people to post that meme if he loses if we aren’t watching the 2014 Oscars live? Or, how could we compete to be the first to come up with a “Leo won an Oscar” meme if we aren’t watching the telecast?
