The first full-length trailer for the intriguing upcoming series Penny Dreadful has been released.

Plugged as a psycho-sexual thriller, the show is set in Victorian London and will feature some of gothic literature’s most famous characters – including Dracula, Dorian Gray and Frankenstein’s Monster.

Created by John Logan and executive produced by Sam Mendes, it comes from the minds behind the likes of the Oscar-winning American Beauty and the recent hit James Bond film Skyfall. In front of the camera, the show is headed by Bond alumni Eva Green as Vanessa Ives and Josh Hartnett as American newcomer Ethan Chandler.

The positively bursting cast also includes Rory Kinnear as Frankenstein’s Monster, Billie Piper as Brona Croft, Helen McCrory as spiritualist Madame Kali and Timothy Dalton (yet more Bond!) as the mysterious Sir Malcolm.

According to a spokesperson for the show, it will be “very psychological and highly erotic” while Showtime entertainment president David Nevins, called it “very realistic and very grounded, not Bela Lugosi.”

Going by the trailer, Penny Dreadful looks like it aims to be a blend of gory horror, dark fantasy and sex. Lots of sex. Oh, and strange bodily contortions.

However you take that, with the caliber of talent – and the extreme oddness – on show here, it looks like a show not to be missed.

Penny Dreadful is set to air on Showtime in the U.S. on May 11. You can watch the trailer below.

You failed to mention that the first 2 episodes are directed by J.A Bayona, director of The Impossible and The Orphanage. Huge name as well!
