Girls season 3, episode 7, “Beach House,” brought sunscreen and everyone’s issues to a weekend getaway. Catch up on all the drama with our full recap!
Girls brings the gang back together for only the second time this season. Locked away in a house with no escape and uninvited guests there is bound be some fall out. Strap in for Broadway choreography and duck dinners.
Marnie cordially invites you: Marnie’s mom sets the ladies up with a house for the weekend. After assigning the rooms with individual place cards, Marnie picks everyone up from the bus for their weekend of healing to begin. Although the weekend is planned to bring the four of them closer to resolve their collective issues, Marnie’s micromanaging does not even allow for white cheddar goldfish.
After Hannah disapproves of the Instagram worthy beach moments, the others suggestions for female bonding fall through as well. Marnie’s plan for a fancy dinner for four takes a detour after Hannah’s no shoes, no shirt mentality leaves her outside of the store.
Friends of Friends: An overheard spring breakers comment puts Hannah face to face to Elijah and his new boyfriend. With burnt bridges behind them, Hannah believes the best way to move on is to invite Elijah and his friends over.
Over a drunken afternoon, many phases of confession, reconciliation, and Nantucket fizzes. Hannah tries to throw the weekend a life vest with the addition of the theater groupies, but Marnie is not entirely on board with the new guests interrupting their chances at bonding.
That is until Elijah breaks through her harsh vegetable chopping and offers his life up for grabs. After their talk, Marnie starts to drink and loosen up. Her afternoon takes her to open up about Ray, which is met with a bit of scoff from Elijah. Next on her itinerary is learning a Broadway dance routine with the entire gang.
A bottle of wine later, Hannah and Marnie find themselves alone cutting through their issues. Marnie’s abandonment issues and Hannah’s need for space both lead to the rift in their relationship. Casualties of each other’s own self-centeredness, Hannah and Marnie hug it out and agree to move forward.
Honesty Dinner: Skinny dipping preludes dinner as Hannah tells Elijah she is not a fan of the way Pal demeans him all the time. As Elijah starts to brush it off, a now sober Marnie, interrupts to have Hannah kick out all of her friends. When Hannah refuses and announces dinner is ready, each guess it treated to one small slice of duck and vegetables originally planned for four.
After the half nude dinner comes to a close, the Broadway divas perform one grand finale of their musical number. But when Marnie can do nothing but criticize a spontaneous moment, Hannah has enough. As Marnie and Hannah start to bicker, the crowds flee to the rear of the house. Shoshanna shocks everyone finally speaking up about her exhaustion with the group. If it weren’t for her social anxiety, maybe should would feel more comfortable leaving all the whining.
Jessa’s attempt to defend Shoshanna’s intelligence and smooth things over, gets undermined as AA bullshit. Hannah’s narcissism and constant need to remind everyone how different she is, rubs not only Shosh the wrong way, but Marnie as well. Hannah reminds Marnie that she is not one of her projects and perhaps her standards need to be lowered.
The hammer arrives as Jessa points out to Marnie the fact that she just accused the weekend of being ruined because they did not follow everything she planned for them to do. Everyone goes their separate ways declaring what they need greater than anything that can be found in that house.
Elijah and Pal participate in honesty hour in the back of the house. Elijah admits that he does not think that Pal shows him enough respect. But Elijah soon learns that he and Pal are not on the same page. After he drops the “L” word, Pal backs off, but Elijah back peddles and covers it up with sexual favors.
But when morning arrives, so does a silent start to a new beginning. All four ladies walk through the wreckage of the house to clean up the mess from the night and sit side by side waiting for a bus back to the city.
All is not water under the bridge yet, but they are taking the steps to rebuild their relationships
