According to casting calls from Backstage.com, professional off-broadway company, TheaterWorks, is in the market for a musical based on The Lightning Thief, the first book in the Percy Jackson series.

It looks as if the musical will feature older actors in the main roles, like the film adaptation. Percy himself will be an actor 18 or older, but, according to their descriptions, still be portraying the 12 year old described in the books.

Descriptions for a few other characters are listed, which reveal a few interesting details. Here are Percy’s and Grover’s:

- Percy Jackson: “to play 12, must believably play teens, finds out he is a demi-god, our story’s hero, must have a strong presence, a sense of humor, and be extremely likable, has a short temper and is very impatient but is also fiercely loyal and brave, think Daniel Radcliff (sic), young Johnny Galecki, or Toby Maguire; strong pop-rock tenor.”

- Grover: “a happy-go-lucky satyr, like a hippie kid, Percy Jackson’s best friend and protector, must have a great voice and strong comedic chops, think Josh Gad, Jonah Hill, or a young Ashton Kutcher; folk/pop tenor.”

- Clarisse: “all physical types encouraged, the meanest toughest girl at camp, will also play Sally, Percy’s mother, Mrs. Dodds, The Oracle, Aunty Em; high rock belter, soprano with high belt.”

The other casting calls can be seen at this link.

The show is slated to be directed by Stephen Brackett and with a script by Joe Tracz. Music and lyrics are by Rob Rokicki.

Casting calls are now closed, but the show will run from March 17 through the 27 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, an Off-Broadway playhouse in New York City. It is then expected to go out on tour.

If its ANYTHING like the movies…don’t. Just don’t even go down this road. I don’t want to see Percy, Annabeth and Grover singing their way through the underworld to find the Lightning Thief.

Putting aside the fact that Percy Jackson as a musical is ridiculous, why aren’t they casting Annabeth?!?

  • http://ravenclaw1991.tumblr.com/ ravenclaw1991

Oh hell. This sounds ridiculous. I wonder what Rick thinks of this. We already know he hates the movies.

  • hpboy13

I am SO THERE!!! This sounds like so much fun, kinda like Peter and the Starcatcher but a legit musical.

  • Slytherinhero01

No no no no no no no. This is a horrible idea. Once again, I suggest they revamp the movies. Leave Percy Jackson alone at least for a few years, then bring it back with a fresh new take.

  • Joely

    Please no. Not Percy.

  • Haley

“We need music,” Nico said. “How’s your singing?”
    “Um, no.”
Actual conversation of Nico di Angelo and Percy Jackson from The Last Olympian book. Just think about it and then look me in the eye and try to tell me that having a Percy who randomly starts singing at some points of his life would not be an absurd idea.

    • Haley

Oh I also forgot to add Percy’s thoughts after that brief exchange: “I was pretty sure if I tried to sing, all I would cause was an avalanche.”

  • GinnyWeasley002

Me: Psh. Yeah, right! I’m not falling for it THIS year, Hypable. *a few seconds later* Oh wait… It’s not April Fool’s Day. What the???

Annabeth isn’t in the casting call. I REPEAT ANNABETH ISNT IN THE CASTING CALL WTF?! Why would you do this? I can’t even this is a super bad idea.

  • Erik Davison

As if they hadn’t ruined this series enough…

  • M

lol Percy is soo not the guy who would sing it’s such a ridiculous idea. he is a sarcastic little dipshit. adorable but still.. let’s not kid ourselves with his singing abilities please

  • Katrinaofthewelsh

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat. My love for musicals trumps my hatred for any sort of adaptations for this series. I can blame the movies for that but musicals are always fun. I would honestly love to see it. Also, how come there are no mentions of Annabeth in the casting call? Does that mean they already have someone for it? i wonder who…

  • ZofTheTwiHard

    Wait, you just said WHAT?
    Shoot me, please.

  • http://7thpage.com/ Severus Snape

    Only if Starkid does it.

  • PauPau

Why hasn’t Rick Riordan said anything about this on his Twitter account!?!?

  • Asha

    Almost definitely a fluke.

  • Rachel

    - Clarisse: “all physical types encouraged, the meanest toughest girl at camp, will also play Sally, Percy’s mother, Mrs. Dodds, The Oracle, Aunty Em; high rock belter, soprano with high belt.” The person who plays Clarisse will play Percy’s MOM? SERIOUSLY?

  • Arnell Sacayanan Pulido

Let’s just see how it turns out.

  • Wavie

I hope they’ll actually follow the story this time and not alter it like they did with the movie.

  • OrangeNikkie

No, how about they make it an animation that follows the book word to word? Just throwing out my 2 cents

  • n

this will be awesome if starkid was doing it like they did a very potter musical then THAT has promise

  • Claudia

According to the casting breakdown you linked, it says the tour is March 17-27, with the Lortel run this summer. There is also a one night only benefit concert at the Lortel Theatre on April 21 with a cast of celebrities that was announced today. Maybe you confused the two?

  • Amani

OMG, I cant even think about it happening……..

  • Taylor Logan

Why is everyone getting annoyed as if making it a musical is the worst idea ever. Guys, you do know that every musical is not some cheesy melodrama where they just break into a full dance routine with colored flashing lights and 50 backup dancers right? It’s simply a different medium. As for the people that are saying “but Percy would never just break out singing” , no musical character would, that’s not what anyone would ever do, do you think Javert would ever do that? Do you think the real Scar would ever do that? No one would………… Guys, they clearly care about the source material, look at the descriptions, they are true to the book, unlike the movie, so stay calm and don’t watch it if you don’t want to :p
