Doctor Who fans need no longer wait. Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who costume has been revealed, and it’s a bit of a throw back.
Every Doctor has had his iconic look. Some are more “in your face” than others, like Tom Baker’s multicolored, 6 foot scarf, or Peter Davison’s white cricket suit with a celery stalk pinned to the lapel. The trend with reboot Doctor Who has been more of a blendable look. Christopher Eccelston has his trademark black leather jacket. David Tennant had his glasses, pin-stripped suit with sweeping tan coat. Last but not least, Matt Smith had his tweed jacket and bowtie.
Frankly, the new era Doctor Who costumes all have one thing in common: They were cool. Sometimes hipster cool, sometimes cutting edge cool, but regardless… cool. No one was going to be seen in a jacket that looked like a leftover from a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat a la Colin Baker’s unfortunate getup.

According to the BBC, “… Capaldi can be seen in the costume that will define his time as the Twelfth Time Lord in one of TV’s biggest roles. Sporting a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Dr. Marten shoes, the look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden.”
Peter Capaldi’s costume is somewhat reminiscent of the 3rd Doctor, Jon Pertwee’s, suit and cape ensemble pictured below. The color pattern is highly similar, but its cut is way more modern. It’s easy to see that the Doctor will have no problem running around fighting aliens with Clara, or flying into action against the Daleks. Peter Capaldi said about his new look, “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”

The creative team is also quite enthusiastic about the design. Showrunner Steven Moffat added, “New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!” The new Controller of BBC One, Charlotte Moore, chimed in to add, “Peter Capaldi’s Doctor is officially recorded in history today with the unveiling of his new costume. It’s sharp, smart and stylish – The Twelfth Time Lord means business.”
Filming is currently underway for the series. No official date has been given for the series 8 premiere, but based on previous experience, it will likely debut late summer 2014. Fans can probably expect the first major press during San Diego Comic-Con this summer.
