There is nothing like a good old powerhouse song from Rent to encompass an entire episode’s theme. Tonight on Girls season 3, episode 3, “She said OK,” Hannah and Adam work through an unwelcome house guest and add another milestone to their adjustment to domesticity: dealing with the crazy sister.
Take Some Toilet Paper and Go: Adam’s sister, Caroline, makes a special appearance at 1616 India St. After being dumped, literally on the side of the road, Caroline calls Adam out of desperation. Hannah tries to see the better side of her, but Adam does not want her tornado type of negativity in their lives. Adam asks for Hannah’s trust on this one and Hannah agrees. Wouldn’t you if the person once tried to euthanize her grandmother?
Hannah still invites her to her birthday party since she is only able to push people away so far before feeling remorse.
Marnie, Internet Star: As if Marnie’s life is not spinning out of control enough, Charlie posts a video featuring her in a music video type shoot to Edie Brickell’s “What I Am.”
Ignoring everyone’s advice to get in touch with Charlie and ask him for the password to take it down, Marnie throws herself entirely into planning Hannah’s party. Unfortunately, trying too hard to keep herself micromanaging, Marnie misses enormous social clues that she is close to raining on everyone’s parade. Marnie’s type-A personality to take control and reap the praise of everyone else typically ends up with everyone becoming frustrated with her.
Hannah’s party is an excuse to acquire photos to post on Instagram that will show Charlie that she is moving on and having fun. He checks it, sometimes. A moment arises when Marnie attempts to revive a memory that causes Hannah an overwhelming amount of embarrassment, but sets Marnie in the spotlight. Marnie plans to have Hannah and her on stage recreating a moment from Hannah’s 21st birthday when they sang, “Take Me or Leave Me” from Rent. Hannah puts on a trooper face for a few bars, but ultimately leaves the stage and Marnie behind. Saying no, is really Hannah’s new mantra.
The Middle: Ray is making major strides at Grumpy’s with the added responsibilities, such as hiring staff. As great as the new shop is, Ray does not appear to be entirely comfortable with the amount of pressure that begins to pile up with his new position. However, this does give him something to talk about with Shoshanna when he makes an awkward attempt at small talk outside of Hannah’s party. After meeting a guy, Cody, at the bar, Ray discovers that Shosh is still crazy as ever, picking men up on the streets, etc.
Ray fumbles through conversation until he ultimately blurts out that he no longer wishes to have any contact with Shosh. They are not friends and he is tired of trying to put on polite conversation when they are together. Shosh mutters an “okay” and that is the end of that.
Ray goes back into the bar and leaves a little while later with a bashed in face. Apparently, if you request a song and the DJ switches it to another person’s request midway, you are entitled to push around the other patron. That patron happens to be Hannah’s editor David, who, though oddly like an elf version of Anderson Cooper, has a nice upper cut.
I Told You So: Hannah laments to Adam that her birthdays never turn out to be amazing nights. Adam takes Hannah’s troubled tale and whips her around the dance floor right next to her parents, whom he seems to admire. Their carefree dancing and joy in each other’s company is something Adam sees with Hannah.
In fact, Adam loves Hannah so much, he made her a necklace with his tooth on it. Oddly, Hannah is flattered by his presentation of genetic material. The good vibes wear off as they arrive home to find a wrecked Caroline standing in the bathroom pants-less, breaking a drinking glass in her hand. Adam triages and Hannah realizes that perhaps Adam does have a valid reason to want Caroline out of his life.
Aside from Hannah’s editor possibly earning himself a chapter in her book, Hannah has a huge moment in her relationship with Adam: trusting each other in areas where they do not have all the facts. Marnie, on the other hand, needs to move on from the past. Granted, in this case, Charlie brought the past to the present, but even an attempt to bring something good back does not always work out. There was not much of Jessa tonight, but it should be noted she did not partake in the “banana” bar. Good on you, Jessa.
