Speaking at the Television Critics Assocation’s winter press tour on Thursday, Showtime head David Nevins addressed rumors of a Dexter spinoff.
Nevins admitted that talks about a Dexter spinoff have been happening and “all options were on the table,” but those discussions haven’t moved further than putting the idea under consideration.
“We continue to talk about it,” the Showtime entertainment chief said. “If we were to do it, we have to have a very good reason to do it. It has to feel like it’s a new show. I’m not interested in doing it if it’s just a continuation. If we were to do it, I would only do it with Michael.”
Nevins reiterated that a Dexter spinoff could only work if its titular character has a role. “That show is that character…and if I were to do something, I would do Dexter in a new concept and configuration. I want the show to feel different, not just a continuation of the old show.”
The rumor mill says that the Dexter spinoff could focus on Debra Morgan (played by Jennifer Carpenter). Over the summer, Showtime signed two-year development deal with Dexter showrunner Scott Buck, and this may be one of his projects.
Dexter’s series finale ended over the summer after an eight season run with 96 episodes. Fans were displaced by the ending for the character because he ended up living a life as a lumberjack.
