As Sherlock series 3 draws ever closer, new photos featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington have been released!
The photos are from series 3’s episode 2, “The Sign of Three.” We already knew the episode would see Freeman’s John Watson married to newcomer Abbington’s Mary Morstan, but these new sneak peaks give us our first real look – including Sherlock’s (Cumberbatch) best man speech at the wedding reception.

Three of these new images depict John and Mary’s wedding – one shows the Baker Street Boys waiting at the church on the big day, a second reveals Cumberbatch’s super sleuth giving his best man speech (to the apparent embarrassment of John), and the third gives us a glimpse at the happy couple posing for photos. However, it’s the fourth that could perhaps be the most interesting – as the best friends sit on a bench and look concerned. Though it might be subtle, the arm rest between them also seems to suggest a divide. Are our favourite duo hitting a rocky patch? The synopsis for “The Sign of Three” reads as follows:
Sherlock faces his biggest challenge of all – delivering a Best Man’s speech on John’s wedding day! But all isn’t quite as it seems. Mortal danger stalks the reception – and someone might not make it to the happy couple’s first dance. Sherlock must thank the bridesmaids, solve the case and stop a killer!
The episode airs in the UK January 5, following the series 3 première “The Empty Hearse” on BBC One, New Year’s Day. The series will hit PBS in America a little later, beginning on January 19.
If that hasn’t whet your appetite for the new run of episodes, then the Sherlock minisode “Many Happy Returns” certainly will! Released on Christmas Eve, the seven minute video catches up with Sherlock’s post-Reichenbach excursions, as well as checking in with John, Lestrade, and (surprisingly) Anderson.
What do you think of the new images? Are you looking forward to seeing John married?
