The CW has released the synopsis for Supernatural season 9, episode 10 “Road Trip.” This will be the first new episode of 2014.
The official press release had the following information about the episode:
DEAN’S BEST CHANCE OF SAVING SAM LIES WITH CROWLEY — Dean (Jensen Ackles) is devastated after Kevin’s death and vows to find the angel that killed him, not only to free Sam (Jared Padalecki), but to seek revenge. Castiel (Misha Collins) arrives at the bunker and suggests they try to separate Sam’s brain from the angel’s so they can talk to Sam and have him expel Gadreel. However, there’s one small problem: the only person who knows how to do that is Crowley (Mark Sheppard). Robert Singer directed the episode written by Andrew Dabb (910).
In the mid-season finale, “Holy Terror,” we learned that Sam’s angelic hitchhiker was not Ezekiel after all; rather, he was Gadreel, the angel who failed to protect the Garden of Eden. Gadreel was imprisoned for his failure, but he was freed when the angels fell.
Metatron, intending to rebuild Heaven with a select group of angels, confronted Gadreel and convinced him to act as his second-in-command. But to prove his loyalty, Gadreel first had to handle any threats to Metatron’s cause, and he started with Kevin.
The episode ended with Kevin tragically dead, Sam’s consciousness completely buried in his own body, and Dean very much alone and filled with guilt. Meanwhile, as the angel war between Bartholomew’s and Malachi’s factions intensified, Castiel killed another angel and took his grace for himself, making him an angel once more.
