Actor Peter O’Toole, who starred in David Lean’s 1962 classic film Lawrence of Arabia, has died at age 81, his agent confirmed Sunday.
The Irish-born star began on the stage in Bristol and London at age 17, but his big break was when Sir David cast him as British adventurer T.E. Lawrence. It earned him the first of eight Oscar nominations, with others coming for films including Becket, The Lion in Winter and Goodbye Mr. Chips. He holds the record for the most Oscar nominations without a win.
He received an honorary Oscar in 2003, although he had initially refused to accept the award.
In recent years he has provided the voice of Anton Ego in Ratatouille and appeared in Matthew Vaughn’s Stardust.
In 2012, he announced his retirement from big-screen acting, but returned to make what is now his final film, Katherine of Alexandria.
O’Toole was set to star in the biblical drama Mary with Ben Kingsley and Julia Ormond, a film which is currently in pre-production.
