The Wolverine DVD/Blu-ray hits store shelves on December 3 and we take a look at whether fans of the franchise should pick up the film.
Hugh Jackman takes on the role of Wolverine for the sixth time and somehow makes it seem like the previous films don’t exist. Jackman defies logic as he’s just as physically impressive as ever at age 44.
The Wolverine takes us to Japan, where Logan is asked if he wishes to end his lifelong struggle. His character has been through multiple wars, torture and the loss of nearly everyone he ever cared for.
We find out that he helped a Japanese soldier live through an atomic blast and now that man is dying, he asks Logan if he’s willing to give his powers away so that he can finally have a warrior’s death.
The film looks fantastic and while essentially all the characters outside of Jackman’s are new to the X-Men franchise, they’re able to stand next to him on screen. The story isn’t mind blowing, but Jackman’s struggle with losing his powers brings a different element to his character that we’ve never seen before.
We also get nice flashbacks with Jean Grey, played by Famke Janssen, which continues Logan’s torture of killing the woman he loved. As Logan continues his journey in Japan, he’s paired up with Mariko who is a mutant herself.
Together they find out what’s really going on behind the death of the man Logan saved in the Japanese POW camp. Logan finally meets the Silver Samurai and during their fight he severs his adamantium claws and begins to extract Logan’s healing abilities, while revealing himself to be Yashida, who had faked his death.
Yashida begins to regain his youth, but Mariko intervenes and stabs Yashida with Logan’s severed claws while Logan regenerates his bone claws and finishes off Yashida. Logan collapses and has one final hallucination of Jean, where he is finally able to let his memories of her go.
Possibly the most interesting part of the The Wolverine is the after-credits scene where he meets back up with Magneto and Professor X. Fans of the franchise will know that this leads Logan directly into X-Men: Days of Future Past, where he will be forced to go into the past to prevent the destruction of all mutants.
The Wolverine’s most interesting DVD/Blu-ray set will be it’s “Unleashed Extended Edition,” which will include 4 discs. There will be a behind-the-scenes feature, as well as an alternate ending for the film. This set will also include a tour of X-Men: Days of Future Past’s set, which we’ve heard great things about.
The regular, 2-disc Blu-ray, includes all the features from the special edition except for the unrated cut of the film and the director’s commentary. Check out the additional features below via the official press release:
‘The Wolverine’ Blu-ray Special Features
The Wolverine DVD/Blu-ray is certainly worth purchasing, especially if you’re looking forward to the next X-Men film’s release. While Hugh Jackman would seem to have run his course with the character, we know that he will continue to play Wolverine in at least two more films considering the box office success of The Wolverine.
